I love those Grant Super Bag gloves as well.
Be careful, I've bruised my knuckles with them a few times - i think the padding can stiffen back up during periods of disuse - or maybe it takes time for the hands to grow accustomed? Sometimes I'll wear a knuckle guard with them.

So the Reyes Super Bag gloves are real Reyes gloves?
coz the normal training gloves don't look like the ones I've seen from mexico.
I probably should've thought about wearing a knuckle guard with my 16oz training gloves, but the pocket was a bit too roomy from side to side as well.

I've got the Grant 16oz lace up trainers. They're kinda like the Reyes Trainers, but the pocket's slightly smaller (still a bit roomy for my tastes). They're also a lil more comfortable around the base of the thumb- i remember the seam on the Reyes gloves being really tight there. The cuff on the Grants is super long - with actual padding on it - and it provides awesome wrist support. The leather on the grants is also a little harder- being a glossy finish instead of matte.

I don't know about you but I found the padding on Grant and Reyes Training gloves to be a bit meager. I usually use Ringsides (IMF, Ultimate Classic, etc), which can be like pillows (or marshmellos in the case of the Ultimate classic).

BTW- Twins is my favorite Thai gear company. Title's selling regular Twins gloves as "super bag gloves" - in a move that sounds similar to what Ringside may be doing with Reyes. The Twins gloves Title sells as "Training" gloves are actually a Title product & don't feel anything like real twins (they have padding on the palm!!!). I never had a pair of Twins with bad velcro- but i heard if you took a lighter to the "hard" side, the hooks would melt back down and start gripping better again.

We do reviews on gear over at boxing forum dot com. (first 2 are 1 word)
So you may want to add to the existing reviews of the Grants.

Thanks for the awesome review - may give the Reyes gloves another chance.

BTW I got a pair of Twins from Ringside and the where pretty close to the pairs I bout when training in Thailand. But the velcro sucks I take them to the shoe repair place and get new velcro put in and they are awsome again.
The ones from Title suck except the bag gloves. I use the Twins to train my beginers in MT and boxing because they allow you to open the hand a little and have no grab bar in the palm.

What do you think of Fairtex?

My coach in fort worth had a deal with the sons of the guy who originally manufactured Zepol & would sell gloves out of our gym called "Classics" which were supposed to be the same as Zepols. I still have a pair of 18s, but don't like 'em coz the leather over the thumb is really thick & keeps me from making a good fist.

I have the same problem. When I use bigger gloves, my accuracy gets off, my combos get wide, my punches start arcing, and my elbows don't stay tight. Over time if I use big gloves my defense goes all to heck too.

I actually started out using big gloves - even going has high as 24oz safety gloves, and was totally in shock when I put on my first pair of fight gloves; so I have been trying to transition smaller, without giving up much protection.

That's why I was really stoked about these Top Ten sparring gloves I got - 16ounces of protection but the size of maybe a 10 ounce glove; no extra bulk. Unfortunately I sweat through the gloves, waterlogged them, gave 'em water damage, and some of the fill around the wrist at the base of the thumb on the right hand glove warped. Still gonna try to use them though.

For the lace ups - you may want to try glovers assistants. I used to use them on my Reyes for the short time I had them and they worked well - providing decent wrist support without the inconvenience. I have 'em on my grants with the extra long cuff and they're not quite as convenient. You can get them from ringside and title.

I'm the exact same way. I'll use a new pair of gloves as a motivator. Unfortunately, when a pair of gloves I've had high hopes for lets me down when I actually get my hands on them; it's a bit of a downer.

Happy BDay by the way. I'm 31 on the 19th. :)

I do muay thai out of Kru Phet's place (Sinlapa Muay Thai aka Shadow Fist MA).
In Fort Worth I trained out of Armadillo Boxing gym (with the Zepols) and New World Combat (for muay thai).
Lived in Austin from 98 to 2000 but only did kung fu there.
Before moving to Fort Worth in 06 I was in Maryland for 4 years & trained at a lot of places out there.

Do you go to Saeksan's? I know there's a ton of gyms in DFW. I always wanted to head over to Plano to visit his school, but at 1.5 hours each direction i just never got around to it.

When Ringside was selling Twins, they were selling real deal; that's where I got my first pair. Then Ringside switched to Windy. My first pair of Windys were garbage so I never bought another pair of their gloves.

Like I said, I've got Twins "super bag gloves" (aka normal Twins gloves) backordered through Title & hopefully they'll get here sometime this summer.
Someone told me Rajah & King are sub-brands of Twins.

Fairtex remind me of Twins - similar leather.
Fairtex might have a better fill (my Twins bunched up over time), but they have a very straight thumb that's kinda hard to break in.
A lot of my training partners stubbed their thumbs with Fairtex's weird thumbs over the years; not sure if they've changed any since.

Otherwise, the rest of Fairtex's gear is really sweet.
The only piece of Fairtex equipment I didn't like was their jumbo shinguards- which didn't fit me (i have weird feet) & cracked one of my toes.

BTW - where'd you train at in Thailand?
I'm going either next year or the year after and want to go to Sinbi's in Phuket or Dr Saenchai's 13 Coins in Bangkok. My gf will probably try to talk me into spending the extra cash for Fairtex in Phuket.

I agree about the fairtex gear, good stuff, my only complaint is there training gloves have a nylon thumb attachment, twins are better in that respect.

I trained in the Bangplee (BangkoK) three seperate times in the late 90s it was nothing like it is now. Now it is like a resort, which is both good and bad. The thais looked at us like crazy farang for wanting to put ourselves through that without needing the money being a fighter brought in. I would go to Phuckett it is awsome, but your training will suffer for it, too much to do. Maybe your GF will have a better time. I went alone, I can't imagine bringing my wife to train! I also trained at Fairtex in San Francisco I was actually training there in August of 2003 when Alex Gong was shot and killed! Their camps are the best for westerners these days, although I don't really know much about the others you mentioned.

we where in austin at the same time I was there from 1991-2000

here in Dallas I train in a private gym near Market Center. I train fighters as a hobby so I am thinking of opening my own place like the one I go to now, on a slightly larger scale. There are a lot of gyms here, but most of them fall into the martial arts school catagory in my opinion. I've been to Saeksan but it's too far from my house, I live in Park Cities.

My old coach at New World Combat in Fort Worth (Francisco Sanchez-Zambrano) was a Fairtex USA camp guy around that time, you mighta known him. I remember hearing about Alex Gong passing when I was in MD; we were all bummed coz we thought he still had noise to make on the US muay thai scene. Francisco told me some stories about what a great guy he was.

Sucks that Bangplee's not good anymore. I hear good things about Sasiprasa (sp?). There's another muay thai forum where guys that are over there give the low down on the current camps, where's good for farang with serious intentions, and help you make arrangements. I'll probably be working with them before I go.

My gf really wants to go to Thailand, so wouldn't let me go by myself.
We'll probably be married by then anyway.
She's got a Thai friend local who wants to show her around.
Fairtex has the nicest accommodations so she wouldn't mind letting me train all day if we have a nice place to stay at in the evenings.

I so want to get my own house to set up a gym in the back to train folks.
Luckily, my current gym is less than 2 miles from my apartment; the coach is thai and there's another trainer that comes by occasionally who's also thai, with even more experience.

You should come down here to the fights on the 21st.
Should be a pretty stacked amateur muay thai card - actually might be smokers.
The guys from fort worth are coming and my current gym has one guy fighting.

The 16s are Huge inside. where did you get the gloves? I haven't seen velcro reyes at ringside. It also took a while for me to realize hook and loop meant Velcro.

Great info in the review viktor, thanks for posting. I'm looking for new bag gloves at the moment (split a pair of adidas) and I've been looking at either Reyes or Grant.

Interesting you mention bad velcro on the Twins. My current 16s are Twins and the velcro on them is terrible. Rest of the glove is great though. I'll try the lighter trick mentioned by Pork Chop.

I double wrap in my bigger gloves. i don't know why they can't make the interior size standard and just change the padding.

I had a pair of 16oz Reyes Training gloves, sold them to a friend and got 14s that I eventually sold as well. The 14s fit fine, but just weren't enough padding for my tastes. i don't think the 16s really have any more padding than the 14s, they're just larger and bulkier - more surface area instead of thicker padding. So I think it's intentional.

The grants have the same issue with the space in the glove between the knuckles and padding, but at least are a little bit more narrow. They also aren't that well padded either.

I usually spar with my IMF 16s or my newer Top Ten sparring gloves (16s with all the padding over the knuckle - look almost like 10s). Like younghypnotiq, I don't really like wearing knuckle guards to spar (not much feedback).
