Cooper looked very good against McCall and was in good shape. He boxed and slugged. Then, a little while later his drug problems surfaced and he was decisioned by Big Foot Martin and stopped by Nate Miller

Bert Cooper is one of my favourite HWs. He was hot and cold. Cooper never beat A level HWs although he came close to upset some of them. He was the 1st to beat amateur stars Henry Tillman and Willie DeWit in impressive fashion. His fight vs Tillman was a great war. His best win at HW probably was against then world-ranked #6 HW Orlin Norris (TKO8). He also stopped tough Joe Hipp in 5 rounds (watch Russel's video) There were also many more jorneymen/fringe contenders/prospects like Booze, Chaviz, Hernandez, McCall, Melito, Fulilangi, Ross. But his most famous fights were losses to elite opponents in great fights (Holyfield, Mercer, Moorer). Cooper seemed to have problems against big tall HWs even in his early days as a pro (Williams, Foreman, Bowe). After the Moorer loss Bert Cooper was never the same again. He started to lose more and more, but he was still picked as a 'name' opponent for the up-and-coming HWs. Cooper, who started at 18, at 45 fought future world-level HW Luis Ortiz and was stopped in 2 rounds. Maybe his record doesn't look impressive, but he was tough, hard-hitting and exciting HW contender.
Bert lost those legs. Unforgiving sport when you can't do the same things anymore. I was surprised when he lost to Weaver in China. I thought he'd make short work of the old guy. But I recall Weaver being real confident and pointing out although he had a lot of losses, he'd never been beat by a guy shorter than himself. I thought that was interesting and the fight played out like Cooper was in slow motion---to the old guy never known for his speed.
Bert Cooper's career was a lot of fun as a fan. I always rooted for him. His interviews cracked me up. He was a good natured knucklehead. Love that short inside right hand he threw. That punch could hurt anyone if they don't see it
Anyone check any of the recent Bert Cooper interviews out? He's surprisingly coherent considering all of the wars in the 90s and of course later being reduced to a low level journeyman he's been stopped countless times.
I've read the report about that fight. It was said that Cooper had Weaver badly hurt a couple of times but was unable to follow up and old man took the win in a close fight.
Weaver was never shook up badly. Stung like once. He always had his legs. You could say Bert was bothered more by Weaver's left hooks to the breadbasket. Pretty dull fight overall though---kind of surprising with both guy's history of getting ko'd and scoring ko's. I thought at best, it'd be a 5 round fight.
I sat ringside for Cooper-Moorer. (Next to Weird Al Yankovich of all people). It was a hell of a fight. My buddy and I were going crazy when Bert almost stopped him (twice). I gave Bert a congratulatory hug as he left the ring. Sometimes a fighter can win with the fans even when they lose a fight.
