Who beat SRR? Everything I’ve read lists his amateur record as 85-0. I’m also surprised to see Ezzard Charles went undefeated. Especially since fighters in his day were forged through fire, with little regard to maintaining unblemished records.
Sugar Ray lost his first one or two amateur fights before he changed his name to Sugar Ray. His real name was Walker Smith Jr.
Don't even bother entertaining his posts mate, this is the same guy who genuinely believed Charles Martin would definitely KO Anthony Joshua
Nope. Dude was a beast as an amateur, but made some bad life choices. I highly recommend the NYtimes article. https://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/04/...eat-floyd-mayweather-jr-still-regrets-it.html
Actually, he did turn pro. http://www.boxingnewsonline.net/the...r-returns-to-the-ring-and-he-wants-a-rematch/
I knew about the name change...something about Walker Smith forgetting to bring his ID to an amateur fight and using Ray Robinson’s. Herb Boyd’s SRR biography, titled Pound For Pound, lists SRR as 85(69)-0. Who really knows.
Charles Martin’s “effort” against Joshua makes Stiverne from the second Wilder fight seem like a dialed in ATG.
There is a thread about it here. https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/sugar-ray-robinson-85-2-as-an-amateur.319516/ With a link to boxrec in the first post: http://boxrec.com/media/index.php/Sugar_Ray_Robinson#Amateur_Achievements Which said on the page: "Robinson's amateur record is usually listed as 85-0 with 69 knockouts, 40 in the first round. However, he lost to Billy Graham and Patsy Pesca under his given name, Walker Smith Jr."
I'm sure Britain's Johnny Nelson had 13 amateur fights and lost 10 of them. Lost his first 3 professional fights, his record after 11 professionals fights was 6-5. His professional record after 38 fights was 25-12-1 and then went on a 21 fight unbeaten run until he retired through injury. In that 21 fight unbeaten run he won the WBO Crusierweight title and made 13 defences over 6 years, not bad considering how it all started out for him.
