Alexis Arguello or Thomas Hearns- Who was greater?

Yes.

 

Yea me too. If i could go back and change a result I might change this one. Knowing how much it meant to Hearns after having to wait 7 years for redemption.

 

I think Hearns got great satisfaction at Ray mentioning publicly numerous times that Tommy won that fight.

 

2 of my all time favorites. Its Arguello for me. His consistency technique and technical expertise was top notch. Such a pleasure for me to watch. I was happy as a pig in #### when I knew he was fighting on a Sat or Sunday afternoon back in the early 80's

 

Hearns, by a smidge.

He fought better opponents, went up in weight and won well past his best. There are so many recognizable names on his ledger is amazing. Arguello is simply one of my favorite fighters of all time, but he lacks those greats on his resume.

 

Considering the fighter Leonard was, his talent and ability it is worth noting that Hearns won about 70% of the rounds they fought.

Nobody else could do that except Terry Norris

 

Hearns was a master boxer with a lot of speed, height and reach and the threat of immense power behind one of the great jabs. This is borne out in the trouble he gave Leonard.

Terrence? He was of course on another level altogether. He was even out boxing Julian Jackson for 4 minutes of their confrontation before the sudden finish.

 

Hearns for me. The guy he beat are Arguello level and more.. Benitez and Duran are guys Arguello could not have beaten. And Virgil Hill. Hearns did something Arguello could not have done? Could Arguello move up at an older age and beat a 154 pound champion with all those title defenses? Nah.

 

unfair comparison. I love both. I don't want to rate but I did vote. I love both and they are both from that great era of the 1980s. Different fighters but you have to give both credit for making the 1980s and being involved in 2 of the great fights of the decade.. And some great fights. Seeing both guys knocked out Alexis by Pryor and Hearns by Hagler was hard to see. Both guys moving up in weight. Which had a lot to do with both losing that day.. The natural weight guy was helped by the weight. The interesting thing is Alexis worst professional loss was Hearns worst amatuer loss Pryor.

 

Yeah, he has more than a few to choose from.
again for me, Hearne going against an undefeated champ several weight classes from his start was amazing.
and his jab in that fight was nasty!

Two exciting fighters to watch. Great power. Brave. Fought everyone. I have no problem with either being rated a little above the other. I don't think they should be too far apart, though. As for myself, ATG P4P, I have Arguello only just ahead:

Totally agree it was amazing what he did later too. I took time off work to go to the pub and watch Tommy take it to Hill. He was a sizable underdog and the mate and i were thrilled when he prevailed.

 

That fight really hurt Virgil Hill. He had called out Hearns for a few years thinking he would get the name on his resume and he wanted an easy enough fight and the name, similar to why Bobby Czyz always called out Hearns and a few others. When Hearns would come into a fight and in shape he was still a good fighter.I think the guys who wanted to fight him overlooked him and still saw the Barkley knockout or the Kinchen fight. Not the fact he held of Leonard when he was hurt. Virgil Hill's legacy was affected. Tommy was a great, but still he was way past his prime (11 years since he won the welterweight title) and he outboxed Hill and won a Unanimous decision. Hill's reputation never recovered.
