I don't have a great amount of knowledge of the elite heavyweights in the 1980's, outside of Tyson, Spinks and Holmes.

How good was the quality of the division of this time? I have heard in the past criticism against it, stating it was not especially strong. What do you guys think?

What would your top 10 list of the heavyweights from the 1980's look like and why?

First off, welcome to the forum and some friendly advice on your topic....

If a poster named Frankenfrank replies, make no attempt to decipher what the hell he means, nor should you attempt to justify his chosen rankings.
The same can be applied to Ra's Al-Ghul.
You may also find some nonsense about artificial weight, Superheavyweights, Spinks experiment and some mumbo jumbo about the height to weight guidlines of the American armed forces.

One last thing, if you read any response which has any downplaying of either Sonny Liston or George Foreman in it, no matter how miniscule or misleadingly worded, do not attempt to debate the author as this would be most futile.

In the 80s Larry Holmes won 16 world title fights in row! But yep, I guess Tony TNT Tucker did a little better and Michael Spinks too.....

Which would he H2H after 1985, when Tucker and maybe Spinks could be rated higher than Holmes. But there is no way in therms of resume you could rate someone else as Tyson or Holmes #1

Well, didn´t Holmes win the second fight? He could have retired after that one too. I give Tyson more credit for the Holmes job than many more here on BF24, since he showed grid vs Holyfield years later, but he wasn´t the fluid 212lb fighter he was before.
So for arguably for 4-5 years Holmes das definately above H2H-level of Tucker and Spinks. This is half the decade of the 80s. Tucker and Spinks were fine for 2 years.

Ruddock can't make the top 10 in any scenario. His only even semi notable wins in the 80's were over -

Mike Weaver whose last three fights included a stoppage loss to Thomas followed by a stoppage win over Williams after being in desperate trouble and a loss inside 2 1/2 minutes to Smith who had lost 4 of his last 5 fights with the last being a decision loss to Marvis Frazier.

James Broad who had lost 4 of his previous 5 including a loss to Greg Page.

Bonecrusher Smith who was 19-7-1 who hadn't won any of his previous 3 fights including a loss to Adlison Rodrigues.

I can only assume you are talking H2H which would go agaisnt the grain of the norm.

Anyone who puts Holmes or Tyson outside the top 2 needs a check up from the neck up.

You have Tony Tucker mighty high. I couldn’t put Tyrell Biggs above mike Weaver.
