3 years reign as a "world champion".. fought two top 10 contenders. Deontay Wilder Ladies and Gentlemen! If you take out the belt, it's actually a pretty damn good resume. Wilder has faced a lot of good fringe contenders. But when it comes to world class, it's just Luiz Ortiz and Stiverne.
Golovkin..... seriously. Throughout boxings rich history, have you ever met a supposed p4p number 1 who never took any risks whatsoever and chase the easy fights? I can't for the life of me think of ONE example from the top of my head. R. Gonzalez, Ward, Floyd, Pacquaio, Hopkins, Jones Jr, DLH, Whitaker, Chavez, Tyson.... Leonard.... the list goes on. What do all of these guys have in common? They ALL took risks to be great and reach the mythical top spot of the p4p rankings. Yet GGG's biggest win is a close UD against Daniel Jacobs. His 2nd biggest win is over a welterweight titlist who has never fought before or since at MW.... no comment. I seriously cannot for the life of me think of a more protected fighter in history. Throughout his prime even he was like 44-1 regularly vs his opponents. Might of well have fought mannequins with those odds. His fangirls wanted him to fight an ancient, shot, damaged goods midget in Miguel Cotton thinking it would be a legitimate fight for him.... Protection at its finest folks.
It WAS Floyd, for the past few years its been Wilder. Assuming Wilder faces Joshua next, I don't know who will take this title then.
Floyd has took risks, Wilder took risks when he fought Stiverne and even Ortiz. Absolutely NOBODY thought Wilder would beat Stiverne, they all thought it would be a quick knockout. The definition of being protected is avoiding danger. Explain to me what dangerous fights Golovkin has taken? I'll wait.
Wilder has taken risks. I bet you were one of the people who said Stiverne would knock Wilder out. What risks or dangerous fights has Golovkin taken? What fights didn't you favor Golovkin as an overwhelming favorite?
The last genuine risk Floyd took was the Castillo rematch, with the possible exception of Canelo. I'm not exactly sure why you think 'absolutely nobody' thought Wilder would beat Stiverne when Wilder was the betting favourite both times. I don't know what Golovkin has to do with this, but he's fought everyone who will fight him at MW, I don't know what more you could ask. He didn't retire out of a hot division like Floyd, or defend his title against part time boxers like Wilder.
Wilder of course. he's stepped up once to a current top 5 contender and almost got his clock cleaned.
Did i not just give Wilder credit for Stiverne? Did i not give him credit for his resume? It's solid, but lacks top 10 contenders, especially for someone who has held a title for 3 years now. (And yes, i thought Stiverne had a solid shot at KO´ing Wilder) What does Golovkin have to do with any of this? You saying Golovkin is protected? Golovkin fought the best guys available. Sturm turned him down. As did Cotto. (No, Martinez did not duck him. Martinez's career was over by the time Golovkin arrived) Even Gale turned him down when he was still a champ. Alvarez, Jacobs, Lemieux, Macklin and Murray are good names for Golovkins era. Who else was there?
By a top 5 contender... The top guys are supposed to be on a similar level. Whats wrong with having a though fight against one of the best in the division?
