Two Scottish lads in action on bt tonight. Benson didnt look good against Coyle - almost stopped in the 8th and lucky it wasnt a 12 rounder. Wanted him to win as a scot but came over as very arrogant in the build up and on the night. scottish area title level fighter who thinks he is world class IMO Ham lost too. Very tricky opponent who he floored in the third but didnt get going otherwise. Always like the look of Ham and thought he would win this. Will come again
Benson is fairly slick but has no substance, he will only go so far in the pros. Joe is dedicated however he has been in a lot of hard fights including the amateur days. I feel he could get worn out in a couple more years.
Before i get started on my post I would just like to let you know that i have known both of these lads for years and both are very nice humble guys who have worked very hard together to where they are right now. On Lewis Benson, I didn't find him any more arrogant than any undefeated boxer going into the lions den and imo it looked to be part of the plan you get under Tommy Coyle's skin (it kind of did) . If he had been too quiet everyone would have said he was bottling it so he cant really win. On the fight itself Lewis deserves plaudits for managing to stick to the gameplan even when he had been rattled in the 8th he managed to keep his composure and get back to work in the 9th round. I personally had the fight a draw in the end but I couldn't argue with Coyle getting the win just as if Lewis had won by a point I don't think the other team could have argued. Lewis will learn a great deal from last night, he did 10 rounds against a decent operator, he managed to stick to gameplan and managed to come through his first mini crisis in the 8th. He needs to get back in the gym and look to stay around this level of opposition and push forward. Maybe a fight with ex amateur foe Jason Easton in Edinburgh would be a good shout. Joe Ham last night just didn't look his usual self he just couldn't ever seem to get going even after the knockdown in the 3rd. Tyrone was very very awkward and although Joe had lots of southpaw sparring it would have been near impossible to get someone to replicate that style. Tyrone boxed at range then jumped in with his punches and then came off to the side meaning Joe was never really set to get his own shots off. Joe is still young enough to learn and come back from last night and lets be honest there isn't much out there with the style of Tyrone. Same goes with Joe imo he is at that level now and needs to keep himself at that level going forward and maybe look at another fighter in the top 10 in his next fight.
Benson has a bad attitude mate - wont be winning many fans with it IMO or with his style of fighting. A fight with someone like easton would be good but I feel easton would hit too hard for him and be too busy Ham didnt look himself and will no doubt learn a lot from it.
We will have to agree to disagree on Lewis and his attitude as unless he hides it very well I have never felt he has a bad one. Maybe he is trying to put something on to help sell fights etc but in day to day lewis is as nice a person you will meet. Would be interesting with Lewis vs Jason. Iirc Lewis won all of their amateur bouts (not 100% on that stat) but Jason has looked to carry more dynamite since turning professional but has also looked more vulnerable than Lewis. It would defo be a clash of styles and both camps would be claiming they would win. I know if it happens i will be first in the cue to buy a ticket
Both aren't that good, let's be real. They are area level fighters, maybe they'll fight for a british title but they won't win one. However they were both in good match ups on saturday night. Scotland's future is with Josh Taylor, Willy Hutchinson and Lee Mcgregor.
I have met Benson a few times over the years and always found him friendly enough. I gather quite a few people do not take to him well though. Many boxers don't come across well, just part and parcel of the sport.
wasn't impressed with either of these two if I'm honest. lewis benson was very basic and he was lucky that his opponent wasn't a big puncher to his credit he dug deep, his straight right was ok too but he just looked so robotic and nothing really flowed. somebody mentioned Jason Easton fight and that would be a good top of the bill in Edinburgh and id fancy Jason to win pretty comfortably Joe ham looks like he has went backwards, when he first turned over I thought he might reach British/euro level but on sat he just didn't have more than 1 gear, no real gameplan and coulbt adjust to the Irish lads style why didn't he just set about mccullach instead he just stood there posing and letting the fight slip away without even putting up a real fight. joe ham is young enough to come again but he must improve big time
I see benson on various social media platforms still bitching about the result like it was some sort of robbery. It was far from it. An ungracious and incredibly unlike able demeanour this kid. Never known Him ever to be defeated and not whine about the result.
deluded beyond belief to label it an exciting fight and think people want to see a rematch. benson is going nowhere - no power and very boring to watch and no class in his whinging on social media
hes always had delusions of grandeur pal. he was beat in a close fight but instead of just coming out and saying he thought he won but he will learn and move on. he is acting liking a ***** screaming robbery, doesnt surprise me as everytime one of the lads from that gym get beat it is a robbery same as tiffanay vs paulin, John thain vs heffron and carslaw, forsyth vs pagan. all close defeats where they didn't do enough to win but if you listen to the boxers or their coaches all robberys
In fairness David if Lewis was in with a puncher like glen foot last week when he was tired he’d have been stopped imo.luckily coyle was a puncher at all, I actually think coyle v Easton would be a good fight
Billy I have a lot of respect for both Lewis and Jason as fighters and as people. All i have said is that I think Lewis won all of their amateur fights and I believe it would be a fight that all of Edinburgh would want to see. I would never pick a winner between them out of respect I have for the boxers and coaches Terry and Kenny. Don't you think it would be a great fight ? On Jason vs Coyle that is an interesting fight too and it would be totally different to the fight with Lewis. Jason can box but can also get involved when he needs to. I'd be happy to see either fight but as a Scot the fight with Jason vs Lewis is far more appealing.
Valid point - anyone with a punch would have taken him out Easton v coyle would be a good fight for sure
