It goes without saying that Liston should be favored here. My question is how tough of a fight would Moore make it and how long would he last? Is there any reasonable chance of an upset? The best HW version of Moore vs prime Liston

Liston knocks him out early...Too much size strength and power for Moore. Moore would be clever and has tricks to stun Sonny with a right hand, but Sonny had a really good chin and would recover and hammer down Moore. Moore wouldn’t be able to exploit Sonny with exceptional speed. Moore would be standing right there in the pocket with upper body movement but eventually listons gonna break him down with his size and power...listons jab won’t be much of a factor because Archie was ATG at slipping the jab but his left hook is going to be a finishing shot on Archie

This sounds likely and reasonable as an outcome

Maybe Archie's best win against a Liston size hvywt (Archie beat Valdes twice)

1955-05-02 : Archie Moore 196½ lbs beat Nino Valdes 209½ lbs by PTS in round 15 of 15
"In the rough battle, referee Jim Braddock took one round away from each battler because of low blows. There were no knockdowns but each was knocked back onto his heels several times during the exciting slugging match. Archie Moore was bleeding from the nose and mouth at the finish, and his left eye also was swollen. But he could see very well. Nino Valdes forced the fighting in nearly every round and tried to impale his bobbing-weaving opponent with long left jabs and whistling rights. In the 13th session, Nino's left eye was closed tightly shut and he fought on half-blinded and fatigued. Moore's superiority in the 14th and 15th rounds clinched the fight and gave Moore his 20th straight victory." - United Press

    Notes
    • Moore was to have had a tuneup fight against Frankie Daniels in San Diego, California, on March 18, 1955. However, the bout was canceled and Moore's license was revoked by the state commission after doctors said Moore had a heart ailment. The following month, a specialist declared Moore's heart to be "extraordinarily good," and his fight with Valdes went on as scheduled.
    • Promoter Jack Kearns announced that Moore and Valdes would fight for the "World Heavyweight Championship of Nevada." Referring to World Heavyweight Champion Rocky Marciano, Kearns said,

    • Moore said, "This was a big strong boy. But he died in the last three rounds."
    • Bobby Gleason, Valdes' manager, said the decision was "burglary." He accused the IBC of a "double cross" and said, "They used this fight to get Nino out of the heavyweight picture."
    • Valdes said, "There is no chance now for me with Marciano."

If Archie had been bigger he'd have provided Sonny with a very interesting evening but as things were,Liston was too big and strong.

Yep ,I'm in agreement with McVey. Archie gets battered here ,he'd be to brave for his own good and Liston would rip in to him .I'll go 4 rounds and out .

Charles and Moore were almost equal on the light heavyweight totem pole, but many more would back Charles against Liston than would back Moore.

Archie crafty & had power but I see Sonny eventually getting to him. The pace would be key

He might perhaps rock Liston somewhere along the way but otherwise I'd agree

Marciano's detractors harp on his age, but 1955 was a good year for him leading up to the Marciano fight. In fact, he beat more top tier opponents leading up to the Marciano fight than Foreman did leading up to the Holyfield fight.

true & even after the Brutal Marciano beatdown that Archie took, the Old Mongoose went 38-4 fighting Ali 7yrs 3months later & still many good wins over good sized heavyweights & lightheavyweights. I have heard that Archibald Lee Wright took an older guys ID so he could fight at a younger age so he may not have been as old as most think but he was still absolutely the most experienced old fighter that could beat you many ways power or tecnique. He KO'd Bert Whitehurst 2Xs and Burt managed survive Liston 2X Archie also stopped Roger Richer, Willie Besmanoff, Howard King, Pete Radamaker, & 6'4 211lb Alejandro Lavorante among others
