Munguia - Smith

I thought Liam Smith was going to be quite special at one point. Maybe not spectacularly so, but I thought he'd shock a lot of people given the right opportunity. Clearly the ginger one was a bridge too far and the Williams fights definitely put a dent in my outlook but the prospect of Munguia is enough to perk it back up a little.

His style should fit Smith like a glove. The Ali win was impressive only in the fashion it came, the actual outcome was no surprise to anyone who's followed Ali long enough. Smith's a tough nut and Munguia's willingness to engage should give Smith all of the openings he needs to slowly break him down.

There's always the chance Munguia turns out to be some kind of Mayorga clone who can trump technique with brute force, unorthadoxy and thickheaded toughness. I'm not expecting it though.

 

You could be right m8. Always a risky tactic, but often sucessful. Liam Smith is as tough as old boots, has a solid defence, is very fit so ideal for such tactics.

It’s funny the way people saying Munguia is an animal and going to kill Smith. Who are the names on his CV that makes people thinks this. An old Cotto made Ali looked good and it looked like Ali shouldn’t even be at the weight!

The same thing happened last week people were talking as if Tyrone ****ing Zeuge was going to destroy Fielding.... I’d love to know exactly what these opinions were based on. I watched him fight Smith and you could see two years earlier even Paul Smith would have done him! Rocky exposed Zeuge’s level.

I’ve only seen Munguia in the Ali fight and yes, it was devastating but Ali was small, fleshy and tailor made for him. He didn’t look anything super human.

I’m not a fan of Gallaghers usual, tuck up tight and come at him in the second half tactics but I think they’d be spot on for tonight especially I Munguia reads this forum and fancies another easy blow out.

Smith is bigger than Ali, has a good jab, great body shots and loves a war. The Scouse Mexican might out Mexican the Mexican.

Tough fight but I’m backing Beefy to cause a second Scouse shock in a week and add to the easy £200 I won off the stupid bookies on Rocky last week.

So all the people who say this lad is a killer. Why has he just gone 12 with ‘shite domestic level’ Smith? Which is it?

Great fight, great credit to both men. The only big difference in that fight in my opinion was the power. Smith just doesn’t carry the big power needed at top level. He had lots of good moments tonight and almost every round was competitive but Manguia knew he couldn’t really be hurt. He needs to learn though because if the dozens of clean heavy shots Smith landed tonight were from somebody else he’d have been out cold.

 

Totally agree m8. Smith showed alot of heart, something him nor sny of his brothers lack. I had him winning first 3 rounds but think he lost the rest, but made Ali work amd tested him. Smith clearly had a problem with his ankle which certainly hindered him. I dont think he would have won but would have at least been closer on cards if he never had the injury.

 

What a cracking fight that was, particularly the ninth round. It baffles me as to how there are a few who really can’t stand the lad and want him to lose.

The lad has heart in bucket loads. He could have legitimately gone down a number of times last night but he bit down on his gum shield and fought on. Isn’t that what us Brits pride ourselves on, never give up, never surrender? And if you can talk tripe saying he’s Euro level at best, well Munguia is the same. He copped so many great shots off Liam, but that stone plus in weight advantage meant he couldn't wobble him. I thought Liam demonstrated the solid fundamentals that I regularly harp on about. He’s a good little boxer & deserves to be on the world stage. The yanks & Mexicans enjoy his style.

Regarding Munguia, his quite obvious size advantage means that he’s neglecting his fundamentals. He marches forwards, stands square at times, swings wildly, hardly bothers to feint, doesn’t offer any angles. He’s athletically very strong, huge for the weight and every shot looks like it could knock you out.

 

Not on here it won’t, everyone hates him for some reason. I haven’t watched Munguia’s fight last night but I saw enough against Smith to still think he’ll get banjod heavily against someone with power, especially when he inevitably has to move up. Smith was landing right hands for fun.

I agree with you though, he is a beast.

 

Not a fan myself but fair play to him for sticking in there unlike sisters Paula and Stephanie many times

 

I like him for the fact he genuinely loves a fight. Everyone likes a fight after it’s happened win or lose your adrenaline is flying and you feel amazing. But he loves it when he’s getting his head pinged. That smile he does when he’s taking a few is great.
