Yeah, the word has been considered offensive and inappropriate for decades now, for a number of reasons. I thought this was pretty common knowledge, but maybe I’m mistaken? “Colored people” too, in case anyone around here is confused by the fact that the NAACP still uses it.

(Same goes for calling people "Oriental")

Black and African-American are both much, much better than “Negro.” Obviously. Notwithstanding that people who grew up before the civil rights movement used the term, and that organizations that were founded back then never changed their names, it’s still widely considered to be an offensive and inappropriate name. If you don’t believe me, start using the term in your everyday life (especially around black people) and see how people react. I don’t think it’s as big a deal as MDW did, but there’s really no ambiguity here—the term is outdated and inappropriate.

And some people are offended by the term “black” others would question what you would call an actual African who is not American. Like I said, if you are looking to be offended by something you are going to find something to be offended by. I, as an Italian American, could easily get offended by the OP’s screen name but I personally believe that words only have the power you give them so I dont let it bother me.

Sure, some random people might be offended by those terms (extremely few by African-American though). But damn near all of them will be offended by "negro." It's fundamentally different and has been considered so for decades now.

I don't know what it means to go around looking to be offended but I for one find OP's screen name offensive, and I've told him so. It would be a huge gaffe if someone used either term to describe an Italian-American person in a book or in public.

You're not mistaken at all. I think most if not all of the posters arguing that it's not racist are just looking for something to disagree with me on.

No, most are just pointing out the guy with arguably the most offensive username on the board is calling everyone else racist.

If someone going by the name MrSlantEyedChink said he was offended by the word Negro ... I think most would call him out, too.

At first I was willing to give you the benefit of the doubt. In no way is the objection to being called black even close to the objection of being called a negro. I'm incredibly surprised you'd think those two were in any way comparable. Note the black lives matter movement. Not negro lives matter. Not African lives matter. Black lives matter.

It's ridiculous that I'm even entertaining this racist proposition. I sincerely hope you don't actually believe the objection to those two is equivalent. Please don't brother.

I was actually having a pretty good time enjoying the book then I read that little excerpt and immediately thought "wtf did I just read, did that really just happen?" Regardless I still thank you for the years of research you put into your book. A lot of good information in there. Thank you.

Oh c'mon. We both know that my username was created with satirical intention. "Stephen Compton" about as Italian as the leather of my wallet.

You can't tell someone of a specific ethnic group what they want to be called. If a black man wants to be called African American and not black then you have no right to tell him that's not correct. If someone from Mexico wants to be called a Latino then you have no right to call them a Mexican instead when referring to ethnicity. If an Italian American wants to be referred to as a Dago or a Wop then you have no right not to call them that. Not that I think Dago or Wop is the correct term. It's satirical. I'm making fun of the name that white people gave us. Don't like it? Blame them for being so racist.

Nothing offensive about my username. It's satirical and you're a crybaby.

If it means anything I still hope it isn't a representation of his true character but rather a moment of nostalgia for the 1920s where that word was appropriate.

You're a moron. The words themselves are offensive. Look up Dago and Wop. The first word in their definitions is "OFFENSIVE." What do you mean NOTHING is OFFENSIVE about them. They are by definition offensive.

The only person "crying" here is the racist calling everyone else a racist. You're trying to be provocative, and you just come off as a dolt.

You add nothing to the board. Your goal just seems to be to derail threads.

So if a black person joined this forum and called himself the uncensored version of MrNi---rC--n, that wouldn't be offensive?
