This is my tribute to Jack Johnson. The first black heavyweight champion. A man that I have so much respect for.

Johnson had really fast hands and a great uppercut. He’d have to tweak his style to be competitive in modern eras but I think he had the athleticism and intelligence to do so.

It’s a shame he fought such weak opposition during his title reign. Wins over Langford McVea and Jeanette would have done wonders for his legacy in a historical sense

thanks, will do. Consider subbing so u don't miss out on any. I upload usually every 2-3 weeks

Yeah, he kinda drew a color line once he became champ which is very ironic. I think it was because of his narcism complex. He wanted to be the only black man to hold the title for as long as possible. I don't think he necessarily afraid of the black opposition any more than the white. He just wanted to be the most famous and significant black man in the world for as long as he could

I agree with this. However, as in-fighter with mediocre power and limited ability to score on the outside due to his lack of reach would put him in trouble vs. the better modern fighters.

Using the films, Moran, a maybe better than average white hope type actually outscored Johnson from the outside. Willard did the same. Willard wasn't a good boxer. Moran, just average if that.

Johnson's chin, which when tested ( which I define has hit cleanly ) was suspect would also be an issue. If one super middle could KO him, and another floor and hurt him, and merely average punching guys stun him, he's not holding up vs the power hitters larger than him.

His ability to defend vs the good jab is suspect. O'Brien, giving up 40 pounds out jabbed a prime Jack Johnson in 1909. If O'Brien could do it, lots of future good jabbers could do the same. The difference being O'brien was a weak puncher. Most have something much harder to follow up with.

Could Johnson make them look bad? Yes, but his low punch output tells me he wouldn't outpoint them if he fought safety first, counter when you can type of fight.

Essentially the 6-foot 200-pound men with limited reach ( 74" ) who can't punch hard are out of business in the modern heavyweight era. That's Johnson. You could mention Byrd and Toney being a similar size. Sure, but they had very good chins, a key reason for their success at heavyweight. Johnson, IMO did not.

I am a huge Johnson fan and feel he was one of the guys like a Whitaker, a Hopkins, a Chris Byrd that had an it factor and operated in a different gear .. standing on that back foot and countering is a style Mayweather excelled with in the present day .. he was a hell of a talent.

Thanks. I lean toward Johnson was the best around for a while 1907-1910, but I tend to think Langford would have beaten him if given a chance ( 1912-1914 ), with Jeannette who was nearly even with Johnson as a novice having a good chance to outwork him in a 15-25 round distance fight in a similar time frame. A real fight with Gun Boat Smith would have been intersting too.

There is enough film to see on Johnson to judge.

There supposedly is a rare Jack Johnson film post-Willard of him fighting in a bullring, where he shows good defensive skills. Jack Johnson vs Jim " Battling Johnson " is also rumored to have been filmed, and owned.
