Why haven't we seen another Tommy Hearns?

Tommy Hearns was a special fighter. He was tall, long, and he knew how to keep distance and follow up the jab with a monstrous right hand, hooks, and body shots. Why is it so hard for talented long fighters like imam and Easter Jr to do the same? Tonight, against Mikey, all Easter Jr did was jab and not follow up with any hooks or right hand. Easter would be a great fighter if he followed up the jab with a right hand or hooks in a consistent manner. Is this due to lack of coaching? Or has boxing just become another sport where modern-day fighters are not as great as past fighters?

 

Talent pool? If only 1/100 fighters have those attributes then obviously elite fighters with those attributes won't come along that often. It's like saying why haven't we seen another Panamanian as great as Duran. There aren't that many boxers coming out of Panama.

 

Well for one you cannot teach that kind of speed. We go on and on about Hearn's power, but rarely mention his handspeed. He's even faster than Ray Leonard. That's how ridiculously fast he was.

 

You act like the talent and skill hearns created was simple, there's levels to this ****.

Hearns was also a freak athlete which if why he was able to put this talent to team use.

I agree but tonight Easter would've probably won if he had followed up the jab with a right hand and combinations. Easter is a very talented fighter and has P4P potential but he lacks proper fundamentals. If he had those fundamentals he would probably beat everybody from 135 to 147.

 

Maybe, but even if he had more fundamentals he wouldn't be Tommy Hearns or close to it.

You gon need Hearns power to got along with those long arms and you gon need the Hitmans mean streak which most don’t have..

 

I thinking it also has to do with the physical attribute of Hearns. Looking at Easters size, you expect lumbering movement with wide punches and poor balance, but Hearns was fast, fluid and had a straight to the point right. Even guys like Paul Williams was no where close to Hearns talent.

 

Hearns is prob the greatest offensive fighter ever ( chin let him down), I don't think we will c that combo of height reach speed power n skill with the mentality to go along it ever again.

 

If you're talking about pas fighters, then ask you the question why there wasn't a Hearns-like fighter in the 50's, 60's or early 70's either? Or where the fighters in those eras not as great as the late 70's and 80's?!

Hearns was just a one of a kind fighter, and most eras just have one of those guys that you don't see in most other eras

 

Hearns could have been the goat if he was a smidge more cautious.

You have to remember the man responsible for that style died .He had alot of say in the teachings.
And for young fans let me correct you:
Leonard was faster then Hearns and im a Hearns man.

 

I am not sure Leonard was faster. I would say Hearns on delivery. He outboxed Benitez and Hill when he was older and knocked out Cuevas and Duran with speed So even diminished speed was enough at an older age vs Hill. I think Ray had better combination speed. Different types of speed.

 

I thought Bob foster was a fighter from the past that you could compare to hearns.
Fosters power at lhw was devastating.
