I'm near sighted and have about 20/30 vision with both eyes together. This shouldn't be a problem should it? What is the worst vision you should have and still box with?

When I was little my vision was like 20/100. No joke. I had to wear eye patches and glasses for years, and it never got perfect. I'm not sure what my vision is now, but I seem to do ok.

I have horrible vision. One eye is nearsighted and one is farsighted. In the USA rulebook there is a specific vision that you can't be worse than. But it's not enforced. I don't even know what my vision is so if an official did ask there'd be no way to prove it.
Wear contacts and you'll adapt to whatever weakness your vision causes.

Yeah, most times. I didn't get them until this winter and I've noticed a big difference with them. But I've also noticed a lot of habits I developed to compensate for not being able to see certain punches coming.

I do it without, but I was curious about this too... I don't what my exact vision is, but it could be better. I'm supposed to be wearing contacts... but I don't. I used to do frequent sparring sessions and never got the contacts.. because I was too worried about the damage that a straight right could do to my eye with a foreign object like a contact in it or if one the contacts fell right out in the middle of a session (or worse an actual fight), which would just feel embarrassing... any light shedded on this will change my outlook on this topic.

I have horrible sight as well, never bothered me a bit. Your opponent will be pretty close most of the time ;)

They only fall out if your eyes are dry. And 9 times out of 10 you won't notice until you're done and you go to take them out and it's not there. At least that's the way it's been for me. I've only lost them in sparring because I didn't put eye drop in first.

If you don't normally wear glasses or contacts I wouldn't worry about it.

Our second trainer has contacts, they fall out every time he gets hit.

Thanks for the replys. I was looking to get some opinions on the topic. I would think with better vision you would be able to pinpoint what you're trying to hit better, but then again it's not like your trying to hit a target from far away. I'm suprised that some of you box while wearing contacts. I would that assume that would be dangerous or you could lose them but maybe I am wrong. I wonder how many top professionals have less than stellar vision...

It's not dangerous but you can lose them. Just get disposable ones. It doesn't really help with hitting a target better but I have noticed that I pick up on little things a lot better now. Without contacts I couldn't see little twitches or feints that people were doing, or where their eyes would look before a punch. People give a lot of subtle clues as to what they are going to do and if they are all blurry you miss out on a lot of that.

I wear soft contact lenses all the time, in sparring and training. If i dont i feel disorientated. My wits just dont feel the same. Fair enough i have lost a lense or two but this doesnt really matter at the time.

I found this out when i fought in a Muay Thai fight, had spent months training with contact lenses in, then when it came to my fight i was advised to take them out... Big mistake, wish i had kept them in, felt lost and pretty intimidated, especially when walking down to the ring, felt too clumsy and slow.

If you dont train already in lenses then i would guess you would be used to it, but if you do then DO NOT take them out. BIG BIG MISTAKE. Its amazing how it affects you confidence not being able to see properly.

20/30 is not bad at all. There have been many fighters with bad vision. I don't know what the limit is, but you need to be able to see and react to what is in front of you, not read the fine print on the gloves.
