Pea wouldn't fear his power though. Castillo was busy. And Pernell is so far and away superior to Castillo. He's in another galaxy compared to Castillo.

Here's the thing. Floyd's best victory is a Jose Luis Castillo. That's his best win. He's never fought anything like a prime Pernell.

 

What were Pernell's best wins at 135? How do the Castillo fights have any bearing on how Whitaker would fight Floyd?

I think Whitaker-Mayweather is an extremely even matchup. Might give Whitaker a slight edge but I don't know who would outbox whom. Certainly wouldn't bet any money on this fight.

 

Btw, "wouldn't fear his power" might be one of the most overused cliches on this site. All but the most relentless pressure fighters get deterred when they start eating sharp counter punches that they didn't see coming.

 

Have you watched any Whitaker fights or are you just here because you don't like Mayweather?

 

Pernell Whitaker routinely landed 300 to 400 punches a fight against fighters far more lethal than Floyd. Mayweather rarely even throws 400 punches in a fight. Pernell definitely has the style and work rate to outpoint Floyd.

 

Actually you wouldn't. When you're boxing a bunch of teenage prospects, some of whom weren't even 16 yet, yeah, I don't think you're going close to all out; nor do I think you would feel the need to even out anything. I disagree with you're whole line of thinking when it comes to a former champion boxing youths at a camp, no I don't think that applies at all.

 

Pretty much my view of this fight as well. That said, I do think Pea tends to be the busier fighter, which could possibly means he out scores Mayweather.

I don't know. Mayweather has three inches of reach on him. He historically did well against southpaws who lack reach and try to be busy.

That's true of the Floyd after 2007............before that, Floyd was much busier. When he got to the higher weights where he was smaller, it became less about using his legs and more about conserving energy. His defense was good enough that he rarely needed his legs other than to roll-out. And if you throw less punches and land more, it was an easy choice........and don't forget how low Floyd's opponents avg punches per round dropped......that was from the exact pull counter the guy is talking about.

I know someone that was there in Va. Beach and the story is the same......Floyd didn't have a tough time and Whitaker-not in 'fighting shape' at that point, had no answer. Floyd always says 'it was good work' but the last round, he played defense for the most part.....But it is just sparring.

Watch Floyd at 130-135. He threw a lot more punches.........At 135 I think I'd have to take Floyd. Height, reach, more power at that weight......just my opinion. And I was a bigger fan of Whitaker by a long stretch.......

 

Great point........look at all the fighters that were deterred by the defense and very sharp counter shots. Mosley's comment was "It was harder than I thought. I wasn't hurt and wasn't worried about getting knocked out. But later in the fight, when I was getting tired, those shots made me think twice".........coming from a guy with a GREAT CHIN........
