Michael Spinks vs Ernie Terrell

I have only seen Terrell vs Ali. I think Spinks probably outboxes him and wins a decision.

 

Terrell's best run of victories (6/62-6/66): Amos Lincoln, Cleve Williams (SD), Zora Folley, Gerhard Zech, Bob Foster (KO), Eddie Machen, George Chuvalo, Doug Jones. Terrell wins all but one by decision.

Spinks 6'-2.5", 76.5" reach

Spinks by close decision....in a typical Terrell 'stinko' fight.

 

It was early in Foster's career. Foster was fighting as an undersized heavyweight against a far more experienced Terrell.

 

I'd go with Ernie he has the better pedigree at heavy.

 

Foster was a great lhw, but he could not compete at hw at all. Of course, no sane person would expect Foster to beat Frazier or Ali, but he couldn't even get wins vs decent/good heavyweights.

At 175, head to head, i might favour Foster to beat Spinks. However, Spinks was a much better hw. I don't see Foster beating an aging Holmes like Spinks did, and Cooney probably stops Foster too.

Foster was incredible, probably, head to head among the top 3 guys at 175. But some guys just couldn't step out of their division at all. Bob was one of them. Kudos to him for trying. Gutsy guy, greatest left hook ever, great champ

I know i went a bit off topic.

 

With Bob being light and the 'swarming octopus' landing jabs and rights against him?...tying him up?...then doing the same thing over and over? Foster didn't do so well early in his career against Heavies, before he found his mark. Considering eras, IMO, Terrell had 'whiskers' and wouldn't go anywhere against a LH Spinks and would tie him up in route to a UD. My $0.02

 

We also have to factor in that Foster never made a real attempt to be a serious heavyweight. Spinks put a lot of science and commitment forward in gaining 30 odd functional pounds.

 

That is a very good point, i did not consider it.

At 175, although Spinks was fantastic, i do prefer watching Foster. Spinks was great but if i could be a boxer, i would love to have Fosters style and especially that left hook.

 

Foster's just awesome really. One of the very greatest jabs ever and somewhere around the top of the tree P4P power wise. I would have loved to see him in a stronger era but you can only beat what's there.

I'm not saying he would have been really good at heavyweight nor necessarily that he would have been as good as Spinks there but he would have been better than he was i reckon.

 

Head to head, i am not sure who i would favour over Foster among modern light heavyweights. Yes, his comp wasn't great but he looks so good on film.

IMO Foster would have ko'd Roy. I would make him a slight favourite over Spinks but Spinks has a good chance. I don't consider Ward a great 175 lber as he didn't have too many fights there, but i think Foster decisions or stops him late. I can't see anyone else beating him.

You would have to go back to the days of Charles and Moore to find someone other than Spinks who could beat Foster. And even then, Foster would be on even terms with Moore and Charles. Like you said, simply an awesome fighter with immense power and a hell of a jab.
