Michael Spinks vs Ernie Terrell

I look at Spinks record at heavy, he actually lost the rematch to Holmes, an OLD Larry and he beat an alcoholic Cooney . When he fought Tyson I thought he wouldn't last 3 rounds and he couldn't last 2 minutes. Against any young competent heavyweight he has a problem.

 

Still say Terrell beats a HW Spinks. From your post, including your Tyson comment, I'm unsure what you're saying? Terrell could take a punch, IMO from harder hitters than Spinks, and would tie up Michael all nite with his somewhat boring style and...get some shots in as well.

 

I disagree, Spinks was a notorious slow starter, mainly because he was a thinker in there. He checked his opponent out for a few rounds and then always came on. He gave away the first maybe 4 rounds against Holmes in fight #2 but he was all over Larry down the stretch and won enough of the late rounds to pull it out on my card (and the official judges)

OLD LARRY.... I hate this, how about he beat the then 48-0 Larry!! And then beat him AGAIN... And then an even OLDER LARRY came back to make noise in the 90’s, DOMINATING Mercer, and giving Prime Holyfield fits, he was bouncing combos off Holys Head. And then an even OLDER LARRY almost beat McCall. Larry was an ATG and Spinks beat him TWICE period.

Spinks was done by the time the Tyson fight arrived. His knees were shot and he’d been living like a retired fighter (his words) his skills were diminished. NO EXCUSES though, in all honestly he probably never beats that Tyson.. If Spinks would’ve never had the Tyson disaster he’d be looked at completely different at Heavyweight.. MANY thought he’d beat Tyson going in.. I’ve met Michael a few times, he’s a very humble and extremely pleasant individual. He makes no excuses for the Tyson fight but he does say Mike got him at the right time. He also unlike many other fighters admits that his loss to Tyson has to be his toughest fight since it’s the ONLY one he didn’t finish and the ONLY one he didn’t win.. Many fighters pick a fight they won as their toughest fight and completely fade giving credit to those who vanquish them.. Spinks is a rare breed, a real guy.

I’d pick him over Terrell no question, but I’m extremely bias....,

 

Terrell might win a boring decision i think.

 

Why do you think Larry was fighting a light heavy for win 49? he would have lost to a lot of guys that night

 

Terrell is made for Spinks, conventional with a decent jab, Spinks would take the jab away with lateral movement and level changes, Terrell would abandon boxing and walk at Spinks with his hands up as he did Ali, but this would work out even worse for him than it did against Ali, as Spinks’ unconventionalness, Spinks starts to throw lead left uppercuts slipped straight through the high guard of Terrell and would be able to get power on it as well as he could take the lead right hand, but really be using that feint to generate power for the lead uppercut, he’d also would get low and counter and predict his jab and he’d stop him late.
