Thanks for the idea Jack, I have spoken to her. She is great, and does not think much about Baer Jr., and his help to her either! But seems like we are a small circle of great minds thinking alike!

I'm think I'm right in saying that Gary Jacobs was the only Jewish professional boxer in the UK at the time he was active. Jacobs was British, Commonwealth, European Welterweight champion and lost in a world title shot to Pernell Whittaker

    GazOC,
Great thinking, and while Europe is the mecca of historic boxing, my project is going to focus on the influx of Jews to America. There was a good doc done called Ghetto Warriors that talked a lot about England and the Jewish Boxers there.
Thanks for the input and idea!

    Cheers!

There's some great stuff on the web about Joe Choynski. The guy was an animal, fought all the best, beat Jack Johnson, tied Jefferies, etc...

I'm not trying to create waves here but I read a couple months ago on ESB that Max Baer was not Jewish but wore the star on his trunks to promote himself to Jewish fans. Is this true or false. I would like to hear some elaboration on this story.

From what I've read, he was one quarter Jewish, but in the midst of the heat up leading to WWII and his fight with Schmelling, he plastered the Star of David onto his trunks and vowed to never go into the ring without it.

From what I have heard he had a grandparent on his father's side. Acording to strict Jewish law to be Jewish your mother also needs to be jewish. (I don't agree with this rule but this is not what the thred is about.) There is a somewhat well known story about his trainer seeing him in the shower that adds dobut to how Jewish he was. I don't know about his daily practices or if he consered himself Jewish outside of boxing or if he brought his family up as Jewish. If he lived his life as a Jew and raised his family Jewish I personaly would conseder him to be Jewish despite his mother not being Jewish her self and despite the fact he was not circimised.

Let me clarify what I read here is that he was not a practicing Jew. If memory serves me he may have practiced a Christian denomination.

All of those things are correct. From what I know, it was Ray Arcel who say him in the shower, and said that being as he was not circumsied, he was not Jewish. He was a quarter Jewish, from what I know. He didnt practice Judisim, and din not raise his family Jewish. He was burried in a non-Jeiwsh cemetery.
That is the reason I really would like to interview Max Jr. I would love to hear HIM tell me all these things. I think that a lot of non boxing fans know these facts.
The truth is, to me, it doesnt really matter so much. I spoke to Saul Mamby the other day. His mother converted to Judism when Saul was 4, it think. He doesnt consider himself Jewish. But that is what it is.
The thing also about Max Baer, he would have been Jewish enough for Hitler!
It is what it is, I just think it would add to my documentary to hear it from Max Jr., if I can get to him!

    Have a great weekend!
    Happy Fathers Day!

That is a great book, very moving story.

With regards to Jewishness (is that a word???) Jack Dempsey could be argued as being more Jewish than Baer, his grandmother on his mothers side was Jewish, and as has been said already, it comes from the mothers side

The Barney Ross book is amazing. Doug Century is a really smart, great writer who did a lot of hard work to write that book. There are a few other ones that are also really good on the subject: When Boxing was a Jewish Sport( Alan Bodner), The Jewish Boxers Hall of Fame (Ken Blady), Harry Haft (Alan Haft).
Jewishness! I have no idea but I do like that term!
How can I find out more about Jack Dempsey and his family background? That news, is news to me!

    NYSouthpaw,

    What is your email address?

Some beleive that Harry Greb was Jewish, and his real name was Berg. Not sure if this is fact or ficton, but Tunney though Greb was Jewish, as did some of the papers of the time.

    Mendoza,

Would it be ok for you to give me your email?
I can not send you a pm and am not really thinking it is the best idea to post my email.
If that is not ok, then some one else on here who I have spoken to can pm you with my email.

    Thanks
