They both compare in the amount of critics they had/have during their prime.

Growing up during Bowe's era, I can't name a more self-humiliating moment than watching him throw his belt in the garbage can rather than face Lewis. Champs are supposed to fight the top ranked fighter, not who they choose. Wilder hasn't done that.
Rather he's accused of ducking fighters in this era, that IMO aren't worth comparing to any past eras other than journeymen & pretenders from every era. Fury claiming AJ was the problem in negotiations strengthens my opinion as a result.

Looking back in reel-time,when Bowe beat Holy (his big win), got the belt from a blown-up cruiser-weight with no punching power. Not my take, but that was the exact criticism Holy encountered.
Holy can't crack an egg, took a standing 8 from a crack-smoking "Smokin' Cooper, went the distance with old men like Foreman & Holmes, couldn't knock out Bobby Czyz, why? Because fans in that day argued hard as hell that he only fights old geezers rather than the best like Tua, Lewis, Ruddock or Tyson who went to jail- (1992-1998)

Or maybe holy fought Holmes & Foreman only because they beat the young fighters Holy was slated to take on...just as maybe Wilder didn't fight Povetkin because of testing issues and timing.
In other words Holyfield being Bowe's best win became great over time, not as it happened.

I think Wilder is facing the same hardened criticism. Same with Holmes, same with Lennox, both were dogged during their primes.
Lennox called a china chin, and when he lost a 2nd time, the word was- no great could ever have been knocked out twice by no-hopers. Lennox according to a lot of people was a paper champion (like Wilder today), knocked out by journeymen- and beat a shell of Tyson. That was reel-time. Today Lennox is an ATG.

Wilder IMO doens't have anyone worth ducking. He still has some years left at 32, 10 years in 40 fights, I think he can fight another 5, and that is more than enough time to cement his place in boxing history. I say he will be considered one of the best of his era, time will tell if he becomes an ATG. Today he is just a belt holder.
Like Joshua & Fury. Hopefully this Big 3 will work it out!

How can he be Riddick Bowe when he’s already Michael Grant?

to be fair Riddick Bowes era was weak as ****. Wilder only has a tiny little bit to go to reach Bowes level.

I'm not sure I follow your logic. You act as if AJ ended WK's reign and "dethroned" the king of the era, Fury had already done that...

Bowe fought in a American domestic pro boxing scene, before the wall fell

He fought ONE eastern European and he got his ass kicked.

He's lucky he wasn't in a stronger era

I think the OP is a ahead of their time .

The way things are heading could be that Wilder wishes he was Bowe . I have honestly given up on Wilder fighting any genuine threat and a Wilder Joshua fight ain't gonna happen . At least with Bowe you got some good fights and a lot to be pumped up about and Bowe and Lewis at least fought in the Olympics .

You think after a Lewis and Klitschko era the American Boxing Commission is gonna let the only belt the USA holds be threatened ? Wilder is not fighting outside the USA with a belt let alone fighting a threat from a foreigner inside the US . Remember Grant and how the American boxing press and elite said the belt is American and should be held by Americans only , then you know .....

After the Fury fight , it was and still is damage control , heaven forbid if Wilder draws against Breazeale or better yet gets a split decision .

Bowe had a ton more heart and grit than Wilder ever will, and I'm not a fan of Bowe at all.

Wilder's more in danger of being forgotten completely. He'll need to beat Usyk to compare to Bowe, and no way is that fight ever happening.

As much as I agree (and I'm British) Bowe was the real Champion in 92, Lewis was a contender.
