He is certainly overrated. He never beat an elite heavyweight near their prime.. best name being a past it Larry Holmes who hadn't fought in 2 years, and had lost his previous two fights. Anyone elite he faced comfortably beat him.
Atlas is just saying what people have always debated and that's Tyson has never beat a prime top heavyweight. Reasons as to why that is the case have been gone over 1000s of times.
I can't believe we have people defending Teddy here. Atlas continues to make a fool out of himself, if his reaction to Horn Pacquiao and Canelo GGG 2 wasn't bad enough, here he is completely no-selling Tyson. It's hugely disrespectful to Tyson for Teddy to say what he said. Say what you want about Tyson, but he was a legend and one of the if not the greatest and most feared Heavyweights of All Time. For Teddy to talk about how Tyson hid between buildings when he was a kid to not get beat up is preposterous. Even he said how ridiculous what he's saying sounds. Atlas continues to lose credibility. I still can't get over how rude it was for him to tell Horn to his face how he didn't win the fight. That's just unprofessional.
Teddy Atlas is pathetic. He has always threw cheap snidey comments about Tyson when in reality he is s..t scared of him. Mike Tyson is one of the g.o.a.t..... Teddy Atlas is a loud mouthed fool
Elite meaning what? Pinklon Thomas, Michael Spinks and Razor Ruddock were certainly seen as elite when he faced them. There is no debate about that among people whp were around at the time. Pinklon thomas went on a 2 year heroin binge after tyson knocked him down for the only time in his career and stopped him. Spinks retired Tucker beat a in shape focused douhlas, lost to tyson and took almost 3 years off Several of the guys he faced went on to give holyfield lewis and/or Bowe fits years after tyson blew them out. So maybe it was just the way tyson beat them that made them look average when they could still perform very well when well past their prime. Tysons competition has been retroactively downgraded or was seen as inadequate not because they couldnt fiht but simply because he was beating them "without struggling enough" Elite as in ATG in his Prime? Ok well neither did Joe Louis and he is top 2 maybe GOAT. Neither did Rocky Marciano Neither did Jack Dempsey
It's fricken pathetic. And he's coming across like a complete imbecile. Whatever respect I had for Atlas is pretty much gone at this point.
Let's put it this way. Tyson was MUCH better as a HW fighter than Atlas was as either a trainer or commentator.
Spinks was a blown up light heavyweight, none of those wins were elite heavyweights... And as for the poster who said Tyson never lost near his prime, he got outboxed and ko at 23 years old. If his prime was way over before then, it just highlights how overrated he was.
Tyson was a beast in his prime and great to watch too. Unfortunately his prime didn’t last as long as it should have as he couldn’t cope with the fame and riches that came his way and lost focus on his training and development as a fighter. A cautionary tale for today’s heavyweights as I don’t believe we saw how good Tyson could have become.
Tyson was a great fighter. I think alot of people miss the fact that the so called 'heavyweight elite' of his time, Holyfield, Lewis, Bowe, comeback Foreman, Moorer etc, came on in the early 90's when Tyson was in jail. Prior to that, Tyson completely demolished the best the heavyweight scene had to offer for 5 years, who may have been considered elite one day if not for the way Tyson destroyed them. Post jail into the mid/late 90's, Tyson simply wasnt the same fighter. His insane head/body movement that made him so great had faded with age/prison time, and his great combination punching was rediced to throwing single bombs for god knows what reason.
