DAZN doesnt have the money for Canelo

The sport has been on TV since TV began, it's always going to be niche in today's world. Showtime has had boxing for decades, casuals haven't coming flocking, it is what it is but TV is becoming a thing of the past. Before long everything will be online only imo, but I enjoyed your Roy Rogers example. I've never heard of them either.

 

Firstly, Canelo does not make $50m at the moment, despite attempts to paint it as such in the media. Do the maths. He's probably NEVER earned $50m.

His guaranteed purse is around $5m.

1.1m buys at $85 = $93.5m
After the cable providers and HBO take their cut = $46.75m
Gate = $23.5m

That's $70.25m to put on the entire show. He won't be banking close to even half of that. The undercard, the costs to put on the show, Goldenboy, the judges, Buffer etc.

No competition is a bad thing. DAZN doesn’t want or need him. Showtime has nobody to bid against now meaning lower pay for Canelo.

 

The other thing to consider with this is the DAZN budget is annual not per fight. I think Eddies plan is to do 4 cards that are similar to the Chicago card. Which he has not spent the $7.8m on. More like $3m. He will aim to do 8 cards similar to the Andrade card which he’s probably spent $4.5m on. That frees up $45m plus the $7.8m for the 4 big cards he’s planning. That gives him $77m over 4 cards. he could give Canelo very good money to fight the likes of Jacobs 3/4x what he made for Khan

Exactly that. Would increase subscriptions massively. That’s why I think Hearn has thrown out the $8m for Spence vs Garcia as he could make it work. Providing he puts on a lot of decent cards during the year.

 

DAZN needs Canelo. Not only will he bring up the subscription numbers from his fan buse but it will also make DAZN mainstream and your average joe will finally start to know what it is, thus more subscribers.
