25 minute preview of the first 1954 title fight between the Rock and Charles.
All 3 fighters get to talk to the camera.
Everybody's polite, good mannered and courteous.

    Compare it with today.

    Very cool interview.

Charles' Italian is better than Rocky's :p

But even these days we have plenty of well mannered fighters.

Back in the days when the world was still civilized, people were much more respectful toward each other.

Max Schmeling speaking respectfully of his opponents. Remember these guys drew 70, 80, 90k people to arenas without any sort of trash talk.

It was pretty bland as they were told to basically act like robots, it was like watching Leave it to Beaver then watching Married with Children now, I was trying to explain that in the Fury thread of trash talking but a few didn't get it.

One of the reason why Marciano didn't like Ali was his trash talking which is normal nowadays.

Goes back to my post of controlled media where today its not controlled where fighter can say what they want ,gives them an advantage of actually being better trash talkers and making fights more exciting through the actual media.

When there is only one champion and its on free TV you don't need to create a pantomime to sell your fight.

When you are 1 of 4 champions and charge £50 for a poor fight and a terrible under card you need to create some theatre beforehand.

That's bc not much was going on ,it was a internet free time with programs that you had to watch bc you didn't have a choice what was put on the air.

Going to a live fight was the excitement, nowadays why leave the house ?When fights are in HD huge screen T.Vs,media platforms etc..etc..

the sport has grown significantly due to population/technology so it will always sell.

The 50s were also an anomaly, I think. An unusually clean period.

Certainly Galento was a big trash talker in the 30s, and Baer was a showman. And then there are the comments that Johnson's opponents made. Even Walcott threw out the occasional jab before the first Marciano fight. And of course, Ali got a lot of his schtick from professional wrestling, which existed for a long time.

Still, there's something about modern audiences that demands that fighters behave like an emotional frat boy clownshow.

It's boring, if you ask me. Nobody wants to see 2 fighters be nice to each other. People want fireworks.

Trash talking can be cool if it's done right but now it's just horribly bland and forced. Blatantly staged shenanigans to help sell fights. I'll just watch old WWE clips on YouTube if I want the BS that's showcased during the build up to most big fights these days.
