Brown said while preparing for Palomino that Duran once went up to 168 pounds. He said on 8 different occasions he had to take at least 25 pounds off him to get to 135.

It wasn't a priority for anyone else then. All losses have excuses. No one trained and no one should have loss.

End of the day, it was what it was.

Duran may not have been a role model for every fighter with his actions and methods. However he was a fighter, an irrational guy who acted on instinct.

Him being this way created the legend he became.

And made him without doubt except for the jealous haters as great a fighter as the world has ever seen.

Any real boxing person who knows the game would have nothing but praise for Duran in what he brought to the sport.

He is a arguably one of the few fighters who ever lived that can be excused for his wrong doings.

Can someone please show me an interview where Duran says "I didn't train for Leonard" every interview I've seen has been the stomach cramp story

Everyone is the same. Everyone has excuses. His are no different from anyone else just that his excuses are accepted. Or seem to be, yet I don't think deep down they are.

They admitted he was overweight a week before the first fight (and a reporter reported it). Why would this fight be different?

Bob Elliott Jr., “Duran Appears Overweight While Leonard Overtrained,” The Ottawa Citizen, June 13, 1980

The evidence is now in front of the boxing public--Roberto Duran is overweight. And so a week before Duran and Leonard meet in the World Boxing Council welterweight championship bout at Olympic Stadium, Duran has his waist line to worry about in addition to Leonard.

“What’s he doing training in woolen long johns and long sleeves,” asked Dundee, as Duran began his daily workout at the Paul Suave Arena, before 1500 paying customers.

    […]

    Where is Duran now?

Obviously he is over the 147-lb welterweight limit but how much?

He’s a couple over,” admitted Brown later before departing to his camp’s downtown headquarters at the Bonaventure Hotel.

“But I don’t get what all of the fuss is about, he’ll get down, he has a lot of hard training to do,” said Brown.

His excuses are accepted and he does get away with it. You are probably right though in that he shouldn't.

He never trained correctly for Leonard 2 and the Hearns fight. Really no one to blame other than himself.

Duran is smaller! Geez! the guy is 5' 7 with a 67 inch reach, and was the greatest lightweight who ever lived. Hearns added 25 pounds to a six foot one body with a 78 inch reach, Duran added it to a five seven frame, which is easier? Look at the pictures of Duran ,Leonard , Hagler and Hearns together. Duran was overmatched physically with them, and was older than all. Manny? the juicer? he would have to stand on his mothers shoulders to kiss Durans azz.

Interesting that there's actually a lot more evidence of Duran having a hard time making weight for the first fight than for the rematch!

June 19, 1980 article: "Both fighters appeared at an unofficial weigh-in Wednesday. Leonard's weight was announced at 147 while Duran, who wore shoes and trousers, was announced at 153. Both fighters must be at the 147-lb welterweight limit by the official weigh-in at noon (EDT) on Friday.

I saw Duran with Barkley a few years ago. You just wouldn't imagine they shared a ring together and that the little guy won.

Of course they would say something like that. Its called mind games. Make Leonard think he has an easy fight with a small older and fat LW who's passing his peak. Come on man you know the deal with the stories that come out of training camps

Did you read the actual quote? Brown is saying that Duran being overweight was no big deal and that he would lose the weight like he always does. So all of that was a lie to trick Leonard? And Duran worked out in long-johns and long-sleeve shirts in the middle of June as part of the same ploy? That's a very imaginative explanation.
