Im not arguing there. My point is they BOTH beaten bums and class opposition but some people use it as a stick to beat Joe with while the same critisism could be made for Pavlik. I rate Pavlik myself, but even Ali had his Chuck Wepners

I wasn't actually referring to Pavlik in any respect. I was just saying, the Lacy win is rightfully hyped, because we were given such **** about how this great American hope was going to destroy the Euro-bum.

    Its called eating crow :yep

william joppy flat out refused to fight calzaghe.

when the fight was in the works , there was big critisim for calzaghe taking a fight with such an easy opponent as joppy.

    this was 2002.

Are we all actually seein eye to eye here? I agree with most of the points above too. I just wish the nuthuggers would give it a rest, I mean those who just insult and dont back up their opinions.

i think it's naaive of anyone to assume that a fight with joppy would have been a bad move for him - so long as the fight was aired in the US.

joppy was never anything special but he was a legitimate stepping stone to a legitimate shot at a hopkins or jones.

people in the US knew joppy. that counts for a lot, weak division or not.

bottom line is - a fight with joppy or sosa or virgil hill, preferrably in the states, would have been JC's ticket to the US. and calzaghe needed to do the hard work to get that rep there.

it didn't happen and he never made his name. it's a shame.

oh the irony of calling people "nuthuggers" and then having the audacity to say - and please let me quote you :

"i mean those who just insult and don't back up their opinions".

You guys are going to make excuse for Joe no matter what he does. The facts are the facts. Joe called Pavlik out after the first Taylor fight. In January of this year Joe said Roy Jones "was a great fighter, but he is not a great fighter now." He also said making Jones his last opponent would be a "let down," and that he wanted to fight Pavlik. Joe's words my freind not mine. 3 fights happened since then:

Pavlik scored a unanimous decision over Taylor. Kelly is the first man to knock JT out, AND the first to beat him by decision.

Calzaghe barely squeaked out a split decision over a 43 year old career middleweight who Taylor beat TWICE and looked better against.

Kelly blew Joe's stablemate out in 3 rounds.

Now all of a sudden Joe says Kelly does not want to fight him when the fact is Kelly said he wanted Joe "before he gets one day older."

Interpret that however you like, but it seems pretty obvious to me!

You may not necessarily agree with me but I do believe I try to back up my opinions.
Its not like Ive started a post dissing Pavlik, and I cant recall insulting him. Im just tryna make the point that for financial reasons RJJ is the better option for Joe rather than him bein scared, but id rather see Joe V Pavlik over RJJ myself

but what could calzaghe do if americans did not want to fight him.

    hopkins
    jones
    joppy
    thomas tate

got to remember 1997 to 2003 america basically produced very little 160 to 168.

hopkins victims or middleweights who moved up or natural 168 fighters were

    allen/vanderpool/holmes/johnson/trinidad/odlh/joppy/tate /echols/brewer./mitchell/sheika /

might have left a few out but these were basically the cream of the american crop that i remember that fought stateside before lacy came along.

    thomas tate refused
    so did joppy
echols fight could have been made
    brewer fight was
    mitchell was
    sheika was
johnson lost every major 168 fight he had about 5
vanderpool ko`d by berrio and lacy, although he called calzaghe out daily.
allen odlh/trinidad never moved up to 168.

outside of hopkins moving up calzaghe and ottke cleaned out the american 168 division during those 6 years.

    as to getting exposure
echolls was most probably the most exciting and marketable fighter at 168 from america at this time and he was fighting on american tv for $36k
compare that to the $2 million a fight ottke was on to why europeans stayed in europe during this period.

Good for you. Not only you would like to see KP vs JC, but so would I & the majority of boxing fans & HBO. They know thats a block-buster, while Joe fighting RJJ will simply be a bust. Can't understand how some people say a fight with RJJ would bring in more $$$. They need to get up to speed with the times.

No probs I guess fella, Im from the same neck of the woods as Joe, and as you know we defend our own no matter what. But thats not to say I think Joe is beyond criticsm, but neither is Pavlik, then again who is?

    Sadly, it absolutely would

Pavlik wasn't that much of a draw against Lockett was he? That did some shitty numbers. I know Lockett is a nobody, but Calzaghe isn't a draw in the States either, so I can't see it selling great

Roy Jones is more of a draw I'm afraid.
