Holmes UD but Schmeling gets a few good shots in there

Is this the "**** Joe Louis's opponents" day?

I would say it would be surprisingly tough. I will not go as far as to predict Schmeling, but given his powerful right hand and counter punching skills, it would not be out of the question.

And don't anyone dare say that he was too small. Ernie Shaver was six feet, Mike Weaver 6'1 and under 200 when he debuted, and Michael Spinks a LHW. They all did very well, one dropping, one rocking, and one beating Holmes.

Competitive fight. Schmeling is great countering with his educated right hand over a lowered left as well as setting up pinpoint right hands with his own left. I'd favor Holmes but it would be tough.

Holmes was very open to right hands, I think he would have been caught by a lot of counter rights vs Schmeling, similar to the Louis bout.

I completely agree but didn`t Shavers weigh more than Max plus he was a lot more powerful and didn`t Weaver weigh more by the time he fought Holmes, when he fout Lewis Weaver`s body was awesome.

Schmeling might just be a bit of a stylistic foil for Holmes.

Holmes would definitely have a fight on his hands!

Shavers was 20lbs heavier,Weaver 10lbs, and Holmes was an old man for the Spinks fight.
Caught yes but stopped? No. If Larry managed to get up from Ernie's bomb Max won't discombobulate Larry.
Louis shut Max' s eye with his jab,Larry would do as well with his.

Nice to see a 1930s heavyweight getting some fair consideration for a change.

It’s funny, had Max not beat Louis he would be totally dismissed here and yet Max was a tad past his best when he beat Joe.

I agree with the view that it would be tough for Larry since Max stands a better risk than so many of Holmes’s challengers (and I include Shavers and Weaver in this) but ultimately Larry is a bit too good for Schmeling. And most champions.

I agree, Larry`s jab was quicker and longer than Louis`s and often threww more of them, he was a constant jabber, however Max did lean down to his right in antcipation of the jab with his right glove covering his chin which often deflected Louis`s jab, Marciano used to do the same defensive tatic and was equally aass good countering the jab with his right hand.

I believe that Weaver weighed exactly 200 when he fought Holmes, so did both Spinks brothers. Schmeling weighed 194/195 vs Joe Louis. This fight isn't hinging on 5 or 6 pounds.

The lazy response is that Holmes eats rights, thereby Schmeling has an effect on this match. However, Max wasn't of the degree of athlete or puncher of a Mister Snipes or Shavers to have this effect. Too stiff, too little fast twitch.

    Holmes KO6

I disagree. Schmeling was an outstanding athlete.
