Winky was rated No8 by the ring magazine on March `96 at Light-middleweight Joe Lipsey 25-0 was rated No.8 middleweight, my point is surely Wright would have beaten Lipsey (who I`ve never heard of) so how far up the list would Wright have got? (Lipsey was rated above Julian Jackson at this point, No.10).

This 1996 ring magazine stuff is actually getting a bit creepy now.

I was going to suggest that someone takes that magazine away from you but the flip side is that you may get hold of one from '97 and start all over again.

Good write up in the fight description. Just because you have not heard of someone does not mean they are not good. I would pick Winky to beat Lipsey though.

Lmao. And on top of it, The Ring during the 90s was awful. Very badly made. Think how bad life would to be forever Groundhog Dayed in The Ring March 1996? It is like getting all yr comedy movie knowledge and forever quoting CADDYSHACK 2.

It reminds me of Arthur Dent from The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy.
    You must NEVER lose it
All he needs is a small towel and write DON'T PANIC on the front and he is set.

To answer the question, Wright would have lost to most of the top 10 middleweights in 1996. He wasn't even in the top 3 best Junior middleweights. Winky Wright was always a solid fighter and had good longevity. But, he was NEVER the man at any weight during his entire career. He is being vastly overrated these days.

Well I have never been able secure a copy of the above mentioned collectors item March 1996 ring mag...a shame I hear there are hundreds of thread worthy material contained within it.

All I have access to is rings annual year end ratings for those years.

My initial thoughts are, he was not the man at SWW although he was a solid underrated fighter (but perhaps overrated today?). There is likely a reason he waited 9 years or so before moving to the MW division as well, I think perhaps he could not quite carry the extra weight as effectively at that point.

Trying to put him against all of them he might beat half? But not sure of that either. In isolated fights there is a possibility.

I think he would beat (the vastly overrated) Julian Jackson similar to Tito. Although Jackson was no longer prime at this point.

I think he would not have beaten Hops, Quincy or Reggie Johnson.

I think fights against John David Jackson and Jorge Castro would be very interesting. I think Winky would have a style to frustrate them, but at this stage they may prove to much?

I think climbing to 4th would be about as high as I see him going and the 6-7?range within realistic sights for him.

I’m going to regret this, but as the OP has the most cherished single copy of any magazing people in history ... how about just to try to move this discussion along we actually get a list of who was ranked at MW in it.
