https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/athletics/46273307 4 year ban for clenbuterol...boxing has a lot to learn...
It's also weird that some boxfans seem to buy every ridiculous excuse. Like this article says, full liability when it comes to stuff like that. You shouldn't have it in your system, you benefit from it and it's all on you. 2 year ban at least
What’s bizarre? Positive test in November 2017, provisional ban in December 2017. I imagine he came forward with a defence, they’ve investigated and upheld the ban, hence the no excuses statement... Not convinced he would have ran again anyway after that nasty bike crash...kinda can’t blame him for taking something to help recover from that...
The PED Fury case set a precedent and has opened the door for PEDs - the threat of legal action results in a backdated sentence for all now. PED Povetkin another international example of the legality of PEDs - you cannot make it up.
Whilst that is a generally far farsher punishment than what we see in boxing, who here can claim to have known this guy’s name before reading this article? No one knows who he is. If this was a huge name in Athletics I guarantee they wouldn’t get such a lengthy ban if even a ban. Same thing applies in boxing. If Canelo fails a test it’s swept under the carpet essentially because of the money he generates for so many different parties and economies. But if someone like Peter McDonagh was to fail it would be a career ender.
I tend to agree with this to some extend. No-names or semi known athletes get thrown the book at them more often because there's not much incentive to keep them around, certainly not if they juiced and still weren't that special. But still there's a huge difference between getting caught in most other sports as there is in boxing. Can you imagine if an Olympic athlete got caught 6 months prior to winning a gold medal, and due to procedings this only comes up a year after the Olympics. Do you think there's any chance at all that athlete gets to keep that gold? Or gets away with a 2 year retroactive ban or a 6 month suspension? Highly unlikely.
Same with all sports, a horse fails a test. Top trainer is found to have a rogue member of staff. Nobody trainer and they get the lot thrown at them
The margins in athletics, especially sprint events are decided by hundreths, may thousands of a second. Realistically, a 0.10% uplift in performance can mean the difference between also ran and gold medal winner. I don't think in any other sport, the small uplifts in performance that certain drugs can give, say things you would find in a decongestant, or tainted meat (!) perhaps is going to mean the difference between being top dog, and being a journeyman. Hence why the punishment in atheltics is much harsher. This isn't me advocating drug use in sport by the way, just some reasoning as to why you are comparing apples with pears.
Very true. Like a certain famous UK athlete who has worked with a trainer with a track record of these things and somehow didn't hear his doorbell when the drug testers came
That's the bizarre bit, crash was in Jan 2017, random test in Nov, he'd been nowhere competition and nor was he likely to.
^ got you...assume he was still in receipt of funding or something. Don’t agree re: big names in athletics getting bans, there have been plenty! As for Mo Farah - he’s tested all the time. Canelo’s ban, in particular, was a farce - basically said it’s ok to dope if you’re a big name...
For those who wonder who in the 100 metres has not been caught doping its as per the following link: https://www.reddit.com/r/sports/comments/6ryan4/the_fastest_100m_times_ever_names_crossed_over/ The last record holders to probably be clean in the 100 metres go back to the 1970s Boxing really isnt any different but the benefits from doping are far less than in 100 metre sprint. Maurice greene also got 4 years so its not just unknowns who get hit hard.
Also, to buy into Bolt being clean you have to accept him as an even greater outlier than he already is on paper. There's currently a 1/10th of a second daylight between him and the second fastest ever, which is a huge margin in what is probably the most base of all high profile sports (running as fast as you can in a straight line). In the automatic timing era that gap is unprecedented. If you take out all those who have failed a doping test or have been strongly linked with doping, it is actually .21sec, which is difficult to fathom in an event frequently decided by the width of a vest. That isn't to say that Bolt is doping (of which there is no hard evidence that I'm aware of), but it does highlight that if he is clean he is far and away the greatest anomaly in sprint history. Greene has never served a doping suspension and all of his times and results stand. He did however apparently purchase $40,000 of PEDs including steroids and EPO from BALCO stalwart Angel Heredia, although Greene suggested that he often used to buy things for his training partners without checking what they were.
