It just amazes me how people say, "oh he got knocked down twice so that's 4 points straight away for Wilder".. Why do knockdowns automatically have to be scored 10-8 in people's eyes. Surely if you're losing the round, but scored a knockdown, it shouldn't be a 10-8 round, but a 10-9 round. I just think it's wrong how people just assume a knockdown is a 10-8 round.
They don't, but the fighter who gets knocked down, has to completely and utterly dominate before and after the knockdown to bring it back to a 10-9 round, and i don't think Fury won those rounds decisively enough to warrant bringing the score back to 10-9...just my opinion though
Because a knockdown... Is kinda like a big deal. You really should learn about boxing and scoring rounds.
The 5th round between Wlad and Joshua was an example of a very plausable 10-9 knockdown round. Same with Matthysse vs Garcia round 11.
Trust me I've watched boxing for over 30 years and have had many amateur boxing fights, so yeah your comment is stupid. If a boxer wins the round, but gets knocked down, Imo it shouldn't be a 10-8 round. I don't care too much about scoring rounds, I don't even score rounds when watching boxing, I just enjoy watching the boxing.
I agree with you. There should be no obligatory 10-8 must system in place if a fighter is knocked down. In my opinion, despite the knockdowns, Fury finished both rounds 9 and 12 stronger than Wilder.
Great reply, thanks for telling me you have had many amateur fights. I am really impressed. Anyway, round 9 and 12 were 10-8 rounds.
It better be a flash knockdown or a grazing glove and then it better be a beatdown before and after that... otherwise 10-8 it always is and ought to be.
I have no problem with a 10-8 round. I don't care if Wilder threw 1 punch but got battered around the ring. If that punch knocks a guy down, it should be 10-8. My reasoning makes sense. If judges routinely gave fighters 10-9 just because they landed more, it would encourage pitty pat fighting and big hitters wouldn't bother. This would diminish a lot of the excitement.
The real issue in scoring is the 10-9 rounds though. A "could go either way" type round is scored the exact same as a "that guy took a legit spanking" round. That's one of the reasons we see name/home fighters clearly lose a fight, but getting the nod because they got most or all the close rounds.
There's not, you win a point for winning the round and a point for scoring a knockdown. Only thing is how much you put into the knockdown winning the round, it's like double jeopardy, that KD is most likely going to be the more clean effective punch of the round but I guess it depends on how well the other guy boxers. It's a ten point must so whoever score the knockdown gets the ten points but you can still score the guy knowledge down nine if you thing he deserved to win the rounds still.
Agree! Should be 10-9 when someone just about edges it in a close round. 10-8 When there is a clear and decisive winner of the round. 10-7 When there is a knock down 10-6 When there is a knock down and an absolute arse whopping handed out 10-5 When there is 2 knock downs and an absolute arse whooping handed out
There are 4 scoring criteria 1. Ring Generalship 2. Effective Agression 3. Defence 4. Clean Punches Landed Here's why 10-9 knockdown rounds are so rare 1. It's hard to say you have been the ring general when you've spent part of a round not on your feet 2. It's hard to say you have shown more EFFECTIVE agression when the most significant punch of the round by far was landed by your opponent 3. It's hard to say you have the best defence in a round where your defence had been breached in the most significant way 4. It hard to say you have landed the cleaner punches when the cleanest punch of the round was landed by your opponent. You can get knocked down and still land more clean punches, but your going to need to land overwhelmingly more if you want to get back into the round People are scoring rounds 9 and 12 of this fight 10-9 because they are scoring the round ignoring the knockdown, then deducting a point for KD after that. This isn't how you should score a fight. At the end of the round you need to consider EVERYTHING that happened in the round, then figure out who did better in the various scoring criteria. If you get knocked down in a round at that point you are then a long way behind. If you want to bring it back you need to, at a minimum, hurt your opponent just as much as they hurt you.
The correct criteria I believe taught for certification is : If Fighter A is winning the round and scores a knockdown and continues to win the round after the knockdown, then Fighter A is awarded the round 10-8. However, if Fighter A is winning the round and gets knocked down by Fighter B, then Fighter B is awarded the round 10-9.
A knockdown is serious. In a street fight if you are knocked down hard, you're dead. There's no ref to administer a 10 count while your consciousness returns. Boxing is supposed to be a fight after all. If you lessen the importance of knockdowns further you'll just end up seeing more marathon runners and dancers in the ring who have no problem cruising to 12 round snoozefest decisions...the absolute last thing this already struggling sport needs.
