Could you clarify a little? You seem to implying that if a guy was winning the round and then he gets knocked down a 10-10 even round should be considered. Well how about Marquez Pacquiao II the 3rd round. JMM was solidly winning round 3. He wasnt beating Pacquiao up, but he had a very strong round landing some hard clean shots. But then Pac drops him in the last 30 seconds. All 3 judges gave Pac the round 10-8. What are your thoughts about that?
It's been twenty years, so I don't remember the specifics of that round, which organization sanctioned it, in what state it was fought, or if there's been a rule change in the interim.
That would be my thought, feels like a lot of boxing scoring needs to be reworked but I don't think anyone genuinely questions it when it's score 10-8. Rounds should be scored without knockdowns and then knockdowns factored in at the end of a round to deduct the necessary points. The knockdown itself should be no more relevant to winning the round than any other heavy and effective punch - often that will happen in rounds which are deservedly 10-8, but sometimes it is not. It feels to me like we get so many robberies in boxing because of the scoring system - it allows for complete corruption and can punish good performance. How often do you see a round where one boxer dominates from start to finish with no knockdown, and it's scored 10-9? The next round is very close, not much between them, the guy who absolutely dominated the previous 3 minutes loses it 10-9. The guy who dominated is not ahead on the scorecards because of the scoring system and that shouldn't be the case, IMO. There has to be greater increments to the scoring. There has to be more reward for clear rounds.
No, what I was saying was that, if you score a KD in an otherwise losing round. You get 10-9, you win the round but you don't get awarded the extra point. Which I think is not against the scoring rules since 10-8's for KDs is (from what I remember at least) a fan/judge invention.
I totally agree. A guy is completely touching up his opponent in round 1. Then he narrowly loses a dead even round on all 3 judges scorecards. And we are supposed to believe that the fight is even heading into the 3rd. It's a flawed system.
Yeah 10-10s should be used more. I mean this happens all the time in opening rounds when fighters are just getting into the groove with hardly any action. And then you get 3-0 scorecards and **** like that. When there was almost nothing to separate the two. If you're seriously scratching your head in who won the round, just go for 10-10. I don't use them either as much but I should.
Not at all. Many rounds where one fighter is knocked down can be 10-9 if the fighter gets up and lays wood on his opponent. The 12th round KD was nearly a good example. But although Fury came close he did not quite stagger Wilder after he got up. Very close though. 30 more seconds and Wilder is down and out.
"Roach wasn’t impressed by the judges. He noted that even the two rounds in which Wilder floored Fury could’ve been scored 10-9 for Wilder, not 10-8, because Fury recovered and won the remainder of those three-minute periods." Even Roach knows this.
I agree with most of what you say here. I can compress it into simply scoring the rd the way you normally would and deduct a point for each kd. The scoring of kd's has been a grey area ever since kd's were first scored but boxing authorities have never been able to come to any type of consensus on how they should be scored. If you win a rd you win 10-9. If you win a rd and score a kd you win 10-8. That is a simple equation that tells you the kd is worth 1 pt. Everyone knows the kd is 1 pt so why not apply simple logic and score the rd the way you normally would and take off a pt for each kd and forever put an end to this eternal problem which should not exist. The WBC has a guideline which states that if a boxer who has been kd dominates the rest of the rd he can pull back a pt to make it 10-9. It rarely happens because the level of domination has to be high. Fury did come back but was a long way from pulling back a pt. Under the common sense method it would have been an even rd.
i agree, if you get knocked down you are down to a 10-8 round if you are on your way to getting a 10-8 round by brutally beating down on your opponent and they flash KD you it would make it 10-9 in favour of them
I would say that both Knockdown rounds were 10-8 for Wilder v Fury, but it isn't a given that every knockdown results in 10-8. For example, Wlad v Joshua. I would score the first Wlad Knockdown as a 10-9 to Joshua as by the end of the round, Wlad was beating the hell out of him, and rocked Joshua to the verge of going down himself.
I get that this is what you want to happen, but it's not what the rules currently say. The reward for a knockdown is one point, if you also win the round, as would usually be the case, then it's 10-8. It's not automatic however and nor should it be.
