A primer: how 10-counts work (if a fighter is knocked down) and how they don't...

IB there are still people who don’t understand that 9.5 is nine and one half rounds completed of boxing so the dumb off with the ten count still does not surprise me

Ok so in you opinion the ref gave him 11 seconds more, but as has been pointed out when the fighter gets to his feet and done his required test ( be it ask the fighter to move/talk and then put his gloves up ) he has not gone 11 seconds over. How long does it take to say " hey Tyson are you ok to fight on? ( he may have to repeat himself to be heard ) on this occasion he asked him to step left and right like in the 9th and then ask him to put up his gloves. all in all that would and did take the extra 11 seconds NO BIG DEAL.
And yes the Ortiz time stoppage was different, as you rightly said he never got knocked down. But, he had just had a minute in the corner and with the next round about to start the ref got the Doctor in, even though Wilder had not been knocked down!!! You are trying to tell us that is fairer than Jack giving instructions to Fury when getting up before the 10 after being knocked down ? WoW just WoW
And I give less of a flying fudge about either fighter..Great fight and a shame we are unlikely to see the rematch anytime soon :(

Aaaaand it took all of the very next post after yours for someone to refresh your memory!

The 7th ended with Wilder taking a monstrous assault while clearly badly hurt.

Upon rising from his stool to start the 8th round, the ref calls a break to say hello to the doctor out of nowhere that buys Wilder ample time before Ortiz is allowed to throw another punch.

Infinitely less acceptable than Reiss giving Fury legitimate commands to see if he could continue.

Either way, neither instance deserves a fraction of the attention they have gotten.

You can't complain about Wilder/Fury extra time without being way more upset and complain more about the Ortiz/Wilder extra time.

It's sad this even needs pointing out. I understand if the ref is a good couple seconds off, that should raise some eyebrows. But people arguing over quarter or half of a second? It's beyond ridiculous, they need to stop.

The thing I'd also like to add is, I understand fans doing this kind of thing. We overanalyze situations and sometimes through biases or whatnot try to find things that aren't there.

But Wilder himself? I was honestly surprised he was using that line. Like you're known as a guy who KO's people out cold and now you're hanging on to this "oh he got up half a second late" as a way to claim a KO? It's not a good look.

The ref holds a lot of power in the ten count. He can literally alter a fight.

We rational people already knew all this. The trolls, however, will pretend not to see this thread, because reading it would lead to admitting that Wilder actually got a draw against Fury (on American soil, which essentially means Fury outpointed him).

It's also worth pointing out that the ref always gives a reigning champion an extra benefit of the doubt when it comes to deciding whether or not he can continue. Wilder and Fury both had (and continue to have) a claim to the HW championship. That's why the ref told BOTH of them before the fight that, if either of them got floored, he would give them a good chance to show that they were fit to contnue.

Often after a KD the ref will check to see if someone is OK to continue and sometimes they will check even if there is not a KD.
Look at Holyfield/Bowe 3. You could argue that Holyfield took a similar time to get up and then asked how he felt and then asked to walk forward.

It is common for a ref to make sure the fighter is OK even after beating the 10 count. I saw nothing unusual in what the ref did in the fight. I was glad he didn’t wave it of and started the count. When fury got to his feet he made sure he could respond to command and the fight continued.

The way I see this is, facts are facts and rules are rules that’s true. However this is no different to an incident in a football match where if a footballer/soccer player headers/handballs a goal, a blatant handball therefore a foul, but the ref says it’s a goal. It’s a goal. Rules are rules, that’s a goal.

However 40 years on people will still argue because in its truest form, as a sportsman, that wasn’t a goal. Referees discretion sets the rules but it doesn’t mean it’s right.

Or to put it simply, it would be the same as judges robbery. Judges results are judges results, end of, final - were not arguing facts, were arguing if it was misjudged.

I’m rooting for fury but I could see wilders argument, was it misref’d? If the ref took 30 seconds to count 10 your argument would still hold true, but is it right?

Its a stupid argument.... Wilder fans whining about ref adding a few seconds (maybe) when REALLY he should of had MORE TIME to recover!!

Reality is, I couldn't give a hoot if DW wants to celebrate when he thinks he's won and lets face it, there are worse rules to break...
BUT... how come wilder fans want it both ways????? To give Jack Reiss grief about one issue, then blatantly ignore the other issue just because it doesn't suit their narrative??

Wilder got schooled, Fury made the count but lost due to corruption and nothing more... That's about it really.

Now we get to see who's got the balls to face AJ....

1 face, 1 champion and all that.... pffft

EDIT - when Jack Reiss says go to the neutral corner
