Oh yeah, he would have...i think rather, the thread question pertained to what Bobick thought about seeing his conqueror getting destroyed so comprehensively...did he feel avenged, like Quarry was by Cooney's triumph? Kinda sad when you gotta get another guy do the avenging for you IMO.
I get why people do the loading up if the ref does not step in. Ray Mercer loved to crank up punches on guys when they were out, but I don't see the point. I remember Hearns letting Duran fall when he hit him and not hitting him again. You don't want to ruin a guy you just want to win.
This is who certain posters picture every SHW doing against smaller HW fighters. Obviously prime Norton should put up more of a challenge but would he? I mean the guy loved pawing the jab, throwing the overhand right and getting in close to mix up the body attack. Fighting in close is all Cooney could do so Norton will always offer himself on a plate. Norton has a great defence against a jabber or against straight punches or a fighter on his back foot, but against a fellow inside fighter he's always going to struggle due to his inability to take flush head shots.
Hmmm...not questioning you but that kind of behaviour doesn't sound like the sort of thing you would expect from Norton? I always though Norton had a lot of class.
Apparently for Geri Cooney it was not a good night for him as well either. Apparently like Jimmy Young, after fighting Norton earlier in the night, tried cocaine subsequently spending years fighting his addiction to it.
I think that's because Cooney's KO of Norton is way more brutal and quicker than Shavers's, thus more memorable.
Young fight was a different kettle of fish. He's competitive in there, it's a bad cut but I don't think he was unable to see. Definitely had to stop it due to the cut but he's not taking unprotected shot after shot as in the others.
Wow I had completely forgotten that Cooney was Caucasian. I just can’t remember if people thought he was great because he was white? Or if his whiteness prevented it?
Jimmy Young was never anywhere near getting knocked out or even decked or staggered by Cooney....that's what was so amazing about this fight. Young stood right in front of Cooney...evading the worst of the incoming leather by fractions of inches...in fact, if it weren't for the cuts suffered by Young, I believe this bout stood a chance at an upset, or...at the very least, Young would have made Cooney look very bad and would have probably lost a typical bullshlt points decision at the hands of the crooked judges.
And I don't care if it was the March 1973 version of Norton, if Cooney fought that version it would have been the same result.
