Archie Moore weighed 188 for his fight with Marciano. If he was a "lightheavy" then Dempsey was, too.

Also, being dropped for 2 by an ATG heavyweight puncher like Moore is no worse than being floored by a featherfisted non-puncher like Tunney, no?

I think Marciano perhaps could repeat his unbeating run, under the SAME condintions that Dempsey did. Only Marciano will blast out Willie, and no dive fight vs Flynn. Also Marciano would benefit from the color bar, so no nasty Harry Wills to defend against. The only thing I worry about is Tunney and the long lay offs Marciano will get in his title rein. But I belive if Marciano is keep busy, by the time he gets to Tunney, he beat him.

So dempsey gets knocked out of the ring and saved by a typewriter vs firpo, yet you dont think a big guy like old joe louis nino valdez or bob baker might have kept him there? In 1918 he fought 10 even rounds with billy miske, you dont think lastarza clarence henry charles or walcott might upset him? how bout willie meehan beating a prime jack dempsey, u dont think a layne satterfield could do the trick maybe once? I think jack would have lost at least once. he was not mr. consistent.

 

I dont know ben, marciano knocked out every 200lb + men he ever fought, something like 11-0(11kos) against them, very impressive record. I watched on film marciano pulverise a skilled big man like Joe Louis, who IMO is better than any big men dempsey ever beat old or not.

I disagree. I think Marcianos superior strength and jaw and low crouch defense would allow him to be a trickier fight for the bigger men. Dempsey wasnt immune to big men, firpo knocked dempsey out if it wasnt for the typewriter saving him. dempseys footwork and speed are great attributes against large men but he stuck his chin out alot and sometimes got overly wild, and a crude slugger like firpo got to him.

 

more proven against the big unskilled men? i guess you could say. Marciano showed me alot against joe louis who was 6'2 215lb and by far more skilled than any big men dempsey beat. Marciano didnt take on baker or valdez, sure but the fight against joe louis gives some indication how baker and valdez would have ended up. Johnny Skhor was a bit of a carl morris same size and style, marciano beat him up so badly skhor retired.

I also think 37 year old joe louis was better than any big man of jacks era except harry wills and george godfrey who dempsey unfortunetly did not fight.


Willard was 37 years old, inactive for the past 4 years, grossely out of shape

Firpo was a mean vard hard puncher but very crude with no skill and he knocked dempsey down 3 times, once out of the ring and dempsey had to be saved by the type writer


fulton was knocked out so fast we dont even know how this fight would have ended up. by far the best big man dempsey beat, fulton was a good fighter. impressive.

You Cant Even Mention Joe Louis As Being A Good Win,it Was Not The Same Louis And Was Compareble With A Few Guys Dempsey Had Fought .i Like Rocky But A Younger Joe Would Have Gave Rocky A (lot) Better Match.this Is Becoming A Everlasting Thread But Anyways As A Fighter As Ive Stated Hes Definatly In My Top 5 And Should Be In Any Real Boxings Researchers Top 10.but As A Champion Its True He Doesnt Deserve Top 10

 

A younger Joe Louis would have been quite a scalp for Marciano. The issue is how does a 37 year old Louis stack up with guys like old Willard, Fulton, Firpo, and Morris. I would rate him the favorite over all of them.
