I don't know, his defense is more leaky than anything else. That right hand that Ward landed on him in the rematch would have stopped a lot of fighters IMO (even though Ward isn't a big puncher that was a full-force shot to the head). Kovalev was hurt but didn't go down. I think the same type of shot put him down against Alvarez but he still managed to get up twice. His chin isn't that bad or he would have been clean KO'd from those shots. If anything, I think he has a good chin but leaves himself open too much.
I agree, a fresh Kovalev needs to finish him, because a tired Kovalev gets stopped. I think McGirt is going to have him boxing though.
The best Kovalev was the dude who wanted to hurt and destroy opponents early, when he tried to become a more well rounded boxer he was far less effective.
Buddy sounds like a really intelligent trainer. Apparently he hasn't gotten around to watching the sequence that had Kovalev KO'd, but I'm sure he'll take a look on the weekend and address the issue in the locker room pre-fight. Kov, you're in good hands again, son.
I fancy a repeat KO as well. His whiskers probably are soft for his overall quality. He never fought punchers (he fought the opposite, actually) in his prime and there were always "rumors/whispers" of a weak chin in camp/sparring stories.
he might have a weakfish Chin since I've never seen him get hurt and recovery. But, I'm not sure about the Rematch all I said for the first fight it "100% Kovalev will not knockout Alvarez" I won't even say he wont now. He has something to prove tonight and a loss tonight will likely be the end of the line for him. I didn't see the first fight as pure domination like others. infact Kovalev only outlanded Alvarez in 3 rounds. rounds 3,4,6 Kovalev outlanded Alvarez. Round 2 Kovalev was kind of a feel out round but Alvarez Jab landed clean where Kovalev was held to one power punch. and I know CompuBox is just two people pressing buttons but it was right in this case. Round two which I don't understand why people gave to Kovalev alvarez outlanded Kovalev and also landed the best punch of the round a straight. Also at one point he jabbed Kovalev and Kovalev flinched so badly then threw a very very wide almost David Lemieux wide shot. 3 was very competitive I can't argue either way. and 4 Kovalev hurt alvarez somewhat badly not a 10-8 badly but a wide round. 5 was close by Kovalev despite alvarez outlanding him. 6 was Kovalev. 7 in the corner Alvarez's trainer told him to put pressure on kovalev who started fighting going backwards... Alvarez would land a jab and Kovalev would answer back with a clean shot that had NOTHING on it. Now overtraining IS a thing but given Kovalev track record with other trainers of not training hard enough and Klimas saying Kovalev didn't train hard for the first fight. and a conflicting report that Duva said he overtrained it's hard to tell. what's weird if Kovalev training camp was 12 3 months which some fighters do have. Khan for example. But, if he did have that length of a camp it OVERLAPS when he was arrested. and I'm not getting into if he did it or since many boxers get into **** and I won't say he didn't do it since I like him as a fighter. or that he DID do it because I'm not overly fond of him. It sounds bad but it also sounds odd. But, cases that have sounded bad have had a guy found not guilty. and cases that sound extremely fishy end bad for the person accused. If Kovalev ends up doing it I will forgive him however. So, I don't think it was from overtraining at all. I think it was he wasn't training properly however. If he did it or not most would be terrified but he has a good poker face. Maybe he still is terrified or maybe he is 100% innocent never met the girl in his life and had time to calm down. I won't pretend that I didn't see Kovalev on the slide since vs mikhalkin I didn't think Kovalev looked great, second half of ward I despite how someone scored it Kovalev didn't look great. ward 2 kovalev looked not so great. Chilemba neither fighter looked great against but only Gvosydk looked great against him. Kovalev to me is one the slide but, that's not to say he can't win. That's not to say he can't go 12. this also depends on Alvarez who nobody has talked about really. Does he get 25% better with confidence. is Kovalev worrying in his head a lot. Is Buddy who I feel isn't a great trainer a help and did Kovalev need to just "drink more water, baby" that's why the rematch Happens. I think Kovalev might win a decision that is controversial perhaps but not a robbery. 5-1 or 3-3 are the two most common scores for the first fight and it feels like "blue and black dress" vs "white and gold dress" I will say as much as I don't like Buddy McGirt is a trainer he's a better trainer than who Kovalev had last which was a massive mistake. anyway TL;DR Kovalev by decision is kind of a long shot on odds but I think it's pretty realistic. I want Alvarez to win but Kovalev by decision is what I'm going with.
