I don't think you have mate, so by your logic you could put on 12lb in 12 months of pure muscle ?? No chance

Can someone provide some scientific evidence, rather than just saying it’s impossible?

I’m not seeing any other than “not possible”.

I don’t see why it’s not possible and no one is educating me by explaining the science behind why...scientifically it seems perfectly logical to me..

I’m not an AJ super fan, acknowledge he may well be on something but nobody here can explain why it’s not possible scientifically...

    Edit:

    https://www.bodybuilding.com/content/ask-the-ripped-dude-how-much-muscle-can-i-put-on-naturally.html

    Still doesn’t explain why though...

It also seems steroids are rife in rugby...certainly in teens...

The comment re: strongman was tongue in cheek...steroids aren’t banned so why wouldn’t they.

It’s a very simple explanation really. It’s very unusual for an athlete who has to have incredible cardio to gain the amount of muscle he did in such a short period without some help. That’s all there is too it and it’s not a difficult concept. That’s what people are suspicious of re: Joshua.

You have a genetic potential of the amount of muscle you can gain naturally. With help this can be exceeded.

Joshua doesn’t have an enormous frame really, relatively speaking he has fairly slender ankles and wrists. His muscle volume doesn’t reflect that which is also a giveaway.

Personally I believe almost all elite boxers are befitting from PEDS of some description. Much easier to accept it when you believe that.

Did some reading on that...but the models for that aren’t perfect and are just a guide...

From what I gather though it’s based on several things. Bone structure and how much your body can carry naturally, testosterone because testosterone is needed to trigger protein synthesis, androgens because these are what the testosterone “reacts” with. Though there are a number of other genetic factors like the natural shape of the muscles among other things...naturally longer and wider muscles make potential muscle size larger.

So essentially testosterone levels and levels of androgens are in some way required for protein synthesis/muscle growth, it’s not just eating enough protein.

There isn’t a magic calculator that can account for all of these different factors and several exist so it doesn’t appear to be an exact science right now...

I also haven’t found anything to explain the science behind why exactly, just that there is some kind of relationship...this isn’t me being a doubter it’s just that I really like to understand the whys and it irritates me when I don’t

I also couldn’t find anything to explain why injecting a ton of testosterone enables you to stack on more than your natural potential when from what I read androgens are required for protein synthesis too. Basically the explanation I found was “it does”.

Interesting though...in a strange way it’s made me tempted to try them...seem to give insane results

Was also reading that you can make huge gains during puberty as your body is naturally in a high testosterone state.

Professional rugby players are pretty much all on drugs, especially the units in the front row. And yes, it's rife and an amateur level too. Look at someone like James Haskell for instance - completely beyond the realms of what's attainable naturally.

True. This is where hormones come into play, especially growth hormone. Hormones essentially command your body what to do, irrespective of calorie intake. If you are injecting pharmaceutical grade growth hormone, it doesn't matter what you eat, you are simply going to grow.

I didn't read all of this because I'm working atm, but protein is basically an irrelevance. I've spent time around a lot of guys on drugs, lifetime users of steroids. If you see some of their eating habits you would realise that when you are on high quality drugs it doesn't matter what you eat. I know guys who live on chicken and chips and stay shredded year round. Protein is massively overstated, it's a big con from nutritional companies flogging their products. In reality, any natural bodybuilder could still make good muscle gains (acknowledging that natural BBing is all about diminishing returns) eating just 80g protein a day, so long as they are in a calorie surplus.

    On the rugby note:

“Speaking to this newspaper under condition of anonymity, the former coach, who has worked extensively in England, says he walked away from the professional game in disgust at the scale of drug-taking.

‘I’m sure there was the odd player taking drugs before the sport went professional,’ said the former coach. ‘But what I found abhorrent was the institutionalised drug-taking that came in in the professional era.

‘Players are being told to bulk up, and it’s being spelled out to them in no uncertain terms that the way to bulk up is to take drugs.

‘You can’t become as big as the players are becoming without a serious amount of drug-taking. Once a core of players take drugs, get bigger and win places, the only way other players can compete is by taking drugs too. It’s a problem that has engulfed the sport and I wanted no part of it. Be assured, you don’t get a physique like a modern-day rugby player by eating grilled fish and doing press-ups.’

The size and power of professional players has increased dramatically in the past two decades. An investigation by The Mail on Sunday earlier this year found that the average weight of an international player today is more than two stones greater than when the game turned professional in 1995.”

So many stories about rugby...used to somewhat idolise the rugby physique...

It’s bad because in today’s insta/social media led era people are made to believe being huge and ripped is normal and can feel pretty shitty that they’re not...it’s irresponsible of sport not to fess up...

Read about a study that had four different groups...all had the same diet, similar ages, experience of training etc.

The group that took steroids and didn’t train gained 7lbs of muscle in 10 weeks, that was more than the no steroids and weight training group (4lbs). Those who trained and took steroids gained 18lbs of muscle. Unsurprisingly the no training, no steroids group developed 0lbs of muscle...

Yep pretty crazy. The average Male with a regular skinny fat body, if they went on testosterone replacement therapy after like one month they would have defined abs without making any drastic changes to diet or training.

I had no idea who RC was so I googled him.

Jeeez, what a mess! That is supposed to look good? Really?

I am 5ft 9 1/2", weight about 74 kg (11st 4lbs?) and I have a tiny belly (ale, crap food, fast metabolism) which I hide very well within my slim/regular frame. I think that I look better and bar a couple of dumbbells at home, I don't work out anymore after a brief 2 year stint on/off at the works gym a few years ago.

I'll be honest here, I would rather lift a glass to my mouth than lift a weight bar the 2 dumbbells that I own. The RC look is, quite frankly, gross.

Another give away now is that when rugby players retire, instead of getting fat and heavier, they actually tend to lose a serious amount of size and weight. Sam Warburton hasn't even been retired a season yet and is already noticeably smaller, especially on his arms, neck and traps.

Yep. The high quality drugs especially growth hormone is quite an expense year round so doesn’t surprise me that they can’t afford them when the playing wages stop rolling in.
