I wish Allen would just give it a good go. I knew there’d be issues from him staying with his hometown trainer rather than shelling out for someone proven. He’s had so many chances and bizarrely has built a decent fan base. I think it’s going to go badly wrong this time though. Maybe Fury will take him under his wing.. seems to be a similar set of issues regarding motivation.
It’s a tough one with Allen. He doesn’t seem mentally stable enough to be a committed boxer but at the same time you worry where he would end up without boxing in his life.
It's time to put an end to this nonsense. Hearn will end up dropping him, he will go into a further depresed state then Warren will feed him to Dubois for a pittance a year from now with the fight sold as 'Can Dubois stop the Iron Chinned Allen who Dillian Whyte couldn't'.
It's looking like they can't find a fight to headline this show with Whyte not committing and now Parker has knocked back the Chisora fight.
You didn't insinuate it directly, but Hearn and the sympathetic public can't just keep up the demand and payments out of sympathy of what may happen if he stops boxing. Health should always be paramount, however painful retirement may be. On a somewhat related note, Cornered, the BT boxing film on Johnny Greaves is a great watch if you haven't seen it. Documents many of the struggles and questions that frequently come hand in hand with boxing - to be vague without spoiling it.
Why haven't they thrown Joyce/Dubois etc. in with Ortiz, Whyte, Yoka, Browne? Maybe because getting bashed up as novice for little money in fights they either can't win or are extremely risky can destroy their confidence, motivation and career? People love to blame Allen, and yes he's a fool, but so are most boxers. But it's obvious these promoters protect and carefully develop their 'prospects' while treating people like Dave as fodder. Look at the people he's fought while 'learning on the job', it's basically criminal. Imagine if they'd actually built him properly and gradually, he would be in a very different position now.
Saw a video of him on instragram saying "no more mr nice guy" but nothing about him drinking. That would surprise me considering he says he isn't a drinker and i believe thats due to his old man liking a drink and it putting him off it.
I like Allen but i’m bored of him p***ing opportunities up the wall and being offered more & more. My take on it is that the lad is terrified of putting everything he has into trying to succeed and failing from it. He instead gives himself a get out clause (lies to himself) by not training or eating well & pressing the self destruct button. That way he’s got an excuse as to why he failed. He also believes that if he does throw everything he has at an opportunity and fails, people will no longer be interested in him. Many of us do this with various things in our lives. ‘I could of done this if I really tried’, ‘I could have been a pro if i’d trained harder’ etc
Good post. I agree. Thing is, Allen has lots of fans. If he’s matched right and forced to train properly - he has the potential to get a more casual audience (who may usually just watch World Title fights) to watch a fight for a British or Commonwealth belt.
Wouldn’t be surprised if it gets pulled. Perhaps Browne will fight Tom Little or something instead on the proviso that’s he’s guaranteed a shot at Price in the next few months.
And he'd not be far wrong in fairness. He looked shocking against that Eurobum last time out and Eddie barely contained his frustration afterwards, both in the ring and backstage afterwards.
