Interesting. Not strongly disagreeing but I'd go for Toney. What do you think would give Eubank the edge here?
This is going to points, for sure. Two excellent chins and neither was a dynamite puncher. Eubank lost all his incentive to KO after the Watson rematch so I'd be looking at the 1990 version of Eubank here (the one who stopped Benn)? I'd give the MW Eubank a greater chance of beating Toney than the SMW version as Toney was more consistent at 168. But I think I'd still go for Toney overall. His defensive slickness would just outfox Eubank imo.
Well for one I am one of the bigger Eubank fans on this forum, and I also find Toney overrated lol. But in seeiousness even though I do ascribe to the belief listed above I find them comparable skill and talent wise. I think it is a 50/50 fight although I will be in the minority. I would expect an inactive lackluster fight from a fan vantage point. Perhaps akin to RJJ vs Hopkins, where there is a cautious respect (in the ring not outside of it lol) for each other. I think both guys had a tendency to take off rounds and portions of rounds as the fight progressed. I think both guys are great counter punchers, and that is not usually a great recipie for excitement. Chins are a wash for me so I see it going to the cards. Toney better defense Eubank better reflexes. I think Toney will have to force the action giving Eubank a few more openings. I always wished this fight had happened as well as Eubank vs RJJ (yes, I pick Eubank there too lol), and Benn vs both of them (I think they would both beat Benn wide at MW and clear but close at SMW). I think Eubank vs Toney would end up a SD in honesty with either guy taking the decision. I just think Eubank would edge it....and that very few will agree
Good post. If it's the very best version of each guy, I'd have to go with James. He was just a better fighter. Roy had a lot of respect for Eubank. But I think it would have been a very dull points win for Roy. Eubank would have had no answer to Roy's speed. How do you think a Toney-Hopkins fight would have played out?
I would expect Hopkins to beat him at MW and perhaps SMW? From LHW or anything above I would pick Toney. Again I don’t think Hopkins vs Toney would be exciting, but it might be a technical match up for the ages. I think Hopkins use of angles would the decider in separating them for him to take a narrow points win, but an SD for either guy or Draw might be in the cards.
Eubank got hit more in the second Watson fight than Toney would have, WAtson used the same tactics Barkley used v Toney but Toney`s defense was far better than Eubank`s and Watson would have missed the same amout of shots that Barkley did.
Toney wins a clear cut decision. Eubank is in it the whole way but Toney was too slick, good defensively and with counters and though he could be outworked sometimes I don’t think Eubank is the guy to capitalize nor is he the guy to use footwork to stay out of range.
Toney wins a 7-5 ,8-4 type fight with Eubank claiming he won. Toney is hard to judge sometimes because he came in ready to fight , very few times actually. He was just such a natural he never trained like he should
I think this is a pick'em fight with not much between either man, but I've always favoured Toney because I think Toney was a more active fighter with a higher workrate, but both could be highly inconsistant and underperform, so on any given day either man could win it.
