I've now seen multiple ignorant folk constantly try and manufacture this nonsense for some time now and it's just not true, not even a bit. It's a feeble attempt at trying to give Mikey all the benefits of the doubt in the event of a loss. Respect to him for going up to 147 and fight the best but he's moving up 1 division, not 2. He's clearly the underdog and most expect him to lose here. He fought at 140 as recently as 1 year ago, and of course the fight before that well vs About Billions. Also Rojas. It's not 2 divisions, it's 1. End of.
He's a small light-middleweight. Brook went up to 154 (And he's also a massive 147 like Spence) and you could clearly see he was on the smaller side of 154. Spence may be a little bigger but not much in it. He would be slaughtered at 160. His slow style doesn't allow him to be effective at 160. If you're going up in weights you usually need to be a 'box and move' style fighter to be successful. Spence isn't one of those. If his body shot and power doesn't have any effect at higher weights, then it makes him useless at 160 because he isn't a master boxer, or even a boxer of Brook's level. In other words, if you're going up in weight you need to have a clear advantage in speed or some kind of attribute to have success. If you're a big bulky power puncher going up weights you've got no chance unless that power translates at that weight.
Can someone please posts the weights Mikey was for the other fights? It would be interesting to know the weight/catch-weights for each fight and also the second weight in on fight nights.
Standing next to each other Spence is obviously taller and wider from the front and back but Garcia is thicker from the side view plus Garcia has a serious noggin on him for such a "small" guy, which means he has dense bones. I do think the size thing in boxing gets overplayed way to often and the truth is both guy are very small and I would bet their walking around weight, their natural weight, is close to even.
Zero? Mikey would beat a lot of guys at 147, so I don't think zero credit. The question I have is Mikey's resume.
MIkey is a 135 pounder. He was too small for 140 and he’s definitely too small for 147. This is obvious.
Yeah, he could comfortably have stayed at 135 lbs. That he chose to fight at higher weights is that he wanted to take on those challenges, not that he got too big for 135. Spence would kill himself trying to make 140 lbs. Mikey had no issues as far as I know making 135 in his lats fight. After this fight he should stay away from 135, though, no matter how it ends. Quickly burning off muscle one has put on is never a smart plan.
