That was my earliest memory of it having consequences. Also the situations with Jones-Hall, Vargas, and Toney jump to mind (although I may be missing some that happened in between those).
Oldest boxing case I can find is Jupp Elze from 1968. in June 1968 Elze challenged Carlo Duran for the European middleweight belt. Elze soaked up a beating over 15 rounds and later died from the injuries sustained during the fight. The subsequent enquiry discovered that Elze had amphetamine in his system and it was argued that the drug allowed him to absorb prolonged punishment to a greater extent than would normally be the case.
The thing is youd have to find out when it became illegal ...nobody would just turn over their cook books unless they were caught/ had too so finding anyone pre prohibition would be tough

Vitali Klitschko and Wlad! Vital tested positive for a banned substance in 1996 when still an amateur and was instantly thrown off the Ukrainian boxing team for the Atlanta Olympics. Klitschko had planned to box at super-heavyweight while his younger brother, Wladimir, was entered to compete at the 201lb heavyweight limit. Wladimir, who was struggling to make his weight, took over the super-heavyweight slot and went on to win the gold medal. "Their dream was to go to the Olympics and win gold medals together," said Vitali Klitschko's spokesman, Bernd Boente. The drugs admission is made in Vitali's autobiography, which has just been released and so far is available only in German. In it, Klitschko reveals that he turned to steroids after aggravating an old leg injury he had sustained in a kick-boxing tournament. "He went to a normal Ukrainian doctor who gave him something that would heal it, but he didn't check the doping list," Boente said. Klitschko admits that it was a steroid - and shortly afterwards the substance showed up in a routine drug test. "They are not keeping this a secret," Boente said. "You have to remember this was the Ukraine of eight or nine years ago. Things are very different now. "At first he was totally angry. He couldn't believe it." In his eight-year professional career, Klitschko has been tested routinely for banned substances, including steroids, and has always been clean. Tests for steroids are normal in Germany, where he had the majority of his contests during his rise to the championship.
At this point I believe everyone is taking something, some supplements at least, while others go a step further and take extra diuretics or HGH to make weight and have an extra edge. Some probably pay alot of money for new, undetectable steroids, It's just the world we living in now.
I agree with you. This is the better question. I do believe the use of PEDs has distorted the game and allowed certain guys to accomplishing things that would have been considered highly unlikely to impossible in the pre-PED era. I'm a big believer boxing should be cleaned up and have a fairer and safer way of dealing with the issue.
Boston Tom McMustache was accused of enhancing himself with racing horses' urine before his seventh rematch with Irish Tex Goldstein on The Fisticuffs in Billoxicuffs card in 1899. Goldstein found out ten minutes before the fight and entered Tom's room with an entourage of enraged Irish Jews who proceeded to clobber Tom so unmercifully that both his eyes swelled shut and his moustache fell off. It was later found out to be scurrilous slander and Tom got his revenge the following year, battering the overmatched Tex over twenty seven rounds to score a unanimous draw (later changed to a no contest after Tom popped dirty for PEDs). That's the earliest I can think of.
