I grew up in awe of Hamed, he was extremely fast, agile and powerful, and a great showman. He brought a lot of attention to British boxing at a time before boxing superstars in the UK. Anyway, in his fight with Barrera, it was a competitive fight, but with Barrera as a clear winner. A lot of "fans" seem to think it was a complete wipe-out and utter dominance, which it wasn't. Barerra was a clear winner but Hamed was still in the fight. I would like to know what reasons Hamed gave for a below par performance, post interviews if you can. I vaguely remember Hamed talking about the weight cut affecting him, being unhappy with the gloves and possibly just being in a bad mood before the fiight etc. Also we can touch on why he only fought once more before retiring. If he re-matched Barrera at the time would he have performed better, or was Barerra just to good?
Barrera was the better fighter. And he’s one of those so full of himself when he got a loss he couldn’t take it and retired
Do you have any more details, it would be really interesting to know. I though he was always with Brendan Ingle...
Naz had parted with Brendan by the time of the MAB fight and was training for the fight in a rented house in Vegas , apparently being trained by his brother if I remember correctly .
Yeah I remember seeing a TV show about it, he was living there with some of his mates and hanger ons, pretty much just d*cking around the whole time. Didn't look like he was training too seriously from what I remember.
Pretty much how I remember it Dub , the thing about Naz was he was such a horrible twat he cleaned up with mugs tuning in to watch him get tuned up . Pretty much the same with Floyd .
The fight was not as competitive as you're saying it was. It featured some of the most lopsided rounds you will ever see against an established and respected champion. Some of the rounds Barrera won were total dissections of Naseems flawed style.
Even with more focused training, how much better would be have fared?this wasn't some guy made for Hamed,so badly was he schooled that I can't imagine him winning. Him retiring was a bit reactive, take your losses like a man and carry on.
Impressive for a guy that small to have such high ko%. I didn't much follow anything below welter but the only 2 decent fighters I see on his resume were a mediocre UD win and then Barrera completely outboxing him.
Hahah, yeah totally, loads of people wanted to see him get beat, although personally I was a big Hamed fan back then (I was a teenager so probably didn't know any better). Actually, to be honest his fight with Kevin Kelly at MSG was probably what sparked my boxing interest now I think about it.
Yea the moment I wasn't a fan of Hamed was when I was at the Steve Robinson fight weigh in with Steve's dad Sarge and Hamed and old fish face were going through their twat gearbox and using all six of their gears .lmao
