I think everyone knows there is a size advantage. What some posters fail to realize is just about everyone who fought Marciano had a size advantage and it didn’t matter. As a matter of fact he had quicker KO percentage of everyone he fought over 200 and believe he knocked out all of them. He did that by being incredible at crowding his opponent, getting inside, making his opponent commit to coming inside with his lean and crouch. He’s also under rated at fighting from the outside. His gazelle punch although sloppy ag Times was used effectively to close the distance. He was great at feints and countering jabs as well. One simply has to watch his fights (aim for ones after Louis as he still didn’t perfect the crouch and lean) and see how he does it . Yes he was often clumsy but often it was organized chaos as he was quick to recover and punched from all angles. The size argument tends to get ridiculous in here how did tiny 209 pound Wilder almost spark the 250 pound Fury?

 

So? All that speaks to is a weak era.

 

He was 32 and still winning. The HWs now are ancient in comparison. He was also a top ten ATG p4p...doesn’t seem that weak to me.

 

The problem is that charles was prime, a top 10 p4p fighter, the greatest lhw ever, and a top 15 heavyweight

And Marciano beat him twice. Not weak comp

It is tough for folks to swallow. Some people need to believe Rocky wore lifts and sat on a booster seat when he went to the movies.

Look, if you really believe that Wzzard Charkes, whose career started like 15 years before the fights with Marciano, and who had been uneven in championship competition in the last couple years leading up to that was "prime" then there's precious little to add. He simply wasn't .

 

Yeah, he was still winning. And by then losing some too, that's the only point I'm trying to make. He wasn't "prime."

 

Agreed he wasn’t prime for sure probably about the same stage Ali was against Foreman. Still top level but starting to lose here and there.

 

Not trying to suggest he was incompetent by then, but I just don't think people should try to pawn him off by 1954 as prime, that's just categorically incorrect.

Not much difference.I wonder how Tyson would measure up ? My mate had his photo taken with Mike in vegas recently same height my buddy is five eight !.

 

Tyson is definitely getting shorter since he stopped fighting. He was listed as being 5’11 when he was fighting and he’s been described in threads like this as getting shorter every year or so. 5’10 then 5’9 and now 5’8. I’m sure he will be the same height as Roman Gonzales before long.

 

Seems about right. I met Tyson back in the mid 90’s and he was 5’9.5 to 5’10” at best, but he was as wide as a house, so it wouldn’t shock me for Tyson to be 5’8” at 50+ years old.
