First of all, he definitely has a difficult personality and is not easy at all to work with. But personality doesn't necessarily correlates directly with being a good or bad trainer. Second, he's not an excellent trainer, unfortunately... Not an awful one as well. Let's say he's a good trainer. A good trainer, who's also very difficult to deal with.
I think coaching has 2 key components Knowledge and the ability to transfer it Management of people and the ability to have the respect of your students and engage them to take in the first component I think atlas has the first part down The second part I think is where he can get in trouble He said the right things to moorer vs Forman but moorer would just go out and do the opposite of what atlas told him to do.
There’s an arrogance with a lot of boxing coaches. A lot of them are also awful communicators. So they may know it all but they can’t get it across. Or they’re simply dislikable and no one wants to be near them.
This is about the best assessment of Atlas I've seen. The only thing I would add, which is another flaw, is that he's a bit of a grandstander, both in the corner and outside of it.
He's probably forgot more about boxing than most will ever know about it. I think he's a great in the studio/commentating and tells things how they are.
Based on that lengthy record breakinflg anateur and pro career. Hes a conman. His amateur psychologist bs act in questioning every fighters character in commentry grates . Atlas talks out of his arrse and is a bully too.His baiting of tyson for 30 years shows his lack of class.
I think he's a character, not everyone's cup of tea. He most definitely knows boxing, of that there is no doubt.
There is plenty of doubt. He knows a little, about relatively little. I wouldn't put him in the upper 50th percentile of trainers in terms of applicable knowledge of and insight on the sport.
Kinda iconic though how he pushed Moorer to victory...atleast in those HBO specials they made it seem that way
Don curry....now there would be an incredible trainer. A fistic theologian...could do it all...beat any style....even a shot chewed up headbutted to death curry...was outboxing mccallum and nunn. Soft spoken,articulate......i say have fon curry replace atlas on espn commentary
