Ali vs Williams. Often hailed as the pinnacle of pre exile Ali. Cited often as the case that Ali was invincible. Williams was washed up, had been shot both literally and figuratively by time of that fight and may not have been that great to begin with. Clear example of a made to order fight to showcase Ali.

I see Leonard/Duran 1 as overrated in significance. It was a great fight, but Ray fought the wrong fight.

He was throwing it around rather than straight.

What allowed Leonard to win was fighting his fight and moving and not giving Duran the inside fight he wanted.

Bingo - That is exactly what I was asking for. " fights in which the winner receives too much credit for the victory i.e. over-rated plaudits."

So the arrival of Ali on the scene as a huge underdog against a champion who appeared invincible wasn’t significant?
How could Marciano v Walcott 2 be more significant and impressive? Most thought it was a bit of a damp squib.

From what I know In round one early. he hurt Marvin with straight punches, but then later he went around the side as he said to hit on the big knuckle, which gave him stability as Emanuel said the bone was almost going through the skin.

I think most people don’t overrate the significance of that fight, they realise how shot Williams was, although he’d won his previous 4 fights and he’d win his next 6 admittedly against weak opposition.
I think people are simply in awe of Ali’s physical gifts and skills in that fight.

Well said. Williams was all shot up and cactus physically but Ali was just ridiculous.

I think it also helps that the film of that fight is for some odd reason better quality than any of Ali's others, even right up to the Berbick fight in 1981.

First fight was definitely close. Your 11-4 score is an outlier (but maybe not as extreme of an outlier as when you scored Hagler-Duran for Duran, somehow).

43 of 46 sportswriters predicted a Liston win and Ali’s odds were 7-1 in a two horse race.
    That’s a huge underdog.
The fight was much more significant than Marciano v Walcott 2.

Ra's isn't a real poster. He's someone trying to mess with people. I wouldn't take anything he writes too seriously.
