Could have something to do with the broadening of entertainment options the digital era has unleashed. Seems to have had a negative impact on just about every avenue of sport and entertainment that once had a greater share of the audience. I'll also say that the last decade's CTE findings has not done boxing any favors, people are less likely to take part in a sport or perhaps even to watch a sport that can do such damage to one's long term mental state. That's not to say that people in the past didn't know that taking too many punches to the head did bad things, but that it's much more obvious to the general public.
I bet every person who voted no would vote yes if this thread was about Golovkin. Canelo is higher up on the greatness ladder than GGG
I don't think people think GGG is that great now.. But he is older, so you can put a mark on his career more.
Not right now. Can he become one? Maybe, he has the time and possibly the skills. But he needs to dominate the middleweight division for a while, or go up and become a top super middle (I am not sure he can do the latter, don't think he's big enough myself - let's not even go there with the Fielding farce!)
The short answer is no. The long answer is..............no. He's going to the HOF. He has 2 wins over first ballot HOF'rs (Mosley and Cotto) even though they were both shopworn, and an arguable win over a likely HOF'r (Golovkin). He's grabbed belts in 3 divisions (so far) and his popularity is through the roof. As for being an ATG, he should have 5 losses (in his prime), he hasn't shown an ability to beat every single style he's been matched against, and was dominated, completely utterly dominated by a much smaller, post prime future ATG where someone who is a surefire ATG potential likely would've done much better. so HOF, yea. ATG, doubtful at this point.
But in reality he only beat 1 (2 at a push). Also until Saturday Jacobs is on GGGs résumé and another one that isn't on Canelo's. Also a draw with Canelo (who in your opinion is above GGG) is a much bigger feat than any Canelo win.
Lots of ATGs have had drug scandels (I'm not defending Canelo or anyone else for that matter) Mosley, Ali, Pryor, Tarver, Toney, Whitaker and Vitali
