Is anything under 6’4 too short to become a heavyweight champion these days?

We need a new Mike Tyson to rise, although something tells me it will never happen again... Mike partnered with Cus was truly special.

No, it's not, but they'll need to be fast, hard hitting, tough and elusive to make up the difference, and referees need to be willing to allow them to fight on the inside and punish taller fighters that try to tie them up. Even if they're not that hard hitting they can still have success with speed, ring iq and good footwork. Byrd is a great example of this latter type, and I suspect Usyk will have success with a similar style soon.

Short, stocky brawlers can still have success if they're explosive, relentless and focus on closing distance. I suspect Tyson would still have success today, and a prime Povetkin would be a threat to anyone. Again, though, a lot depends on the referee. Too many refs these days don't allow shorter fighters to work on the inside, or fail to punish excessive clinch hounds like Pulev.

Ruiz failing to beat Joshua won't tell us anything we don't already know, that shorter, plodding, obese non-punchers don't stand much of a chance against the cream of the division.

Tyson probably did use roids (along with everyone else in the past thirty years) but I agree, he was a legitimately stocky guy with a ridiculous frame for his height. There was a lot to begin with there.

Not if they possess the right blend of skills and style.

6'2 isn't so much of an issue for Ruiz as is his 74" reach which is not great for that division. To put that in perspective Marvin Haglar had a 75" inch reach at 5'9. Sure Tyson had a 71" reach but he also had god like speed and power.

A basketball fight is hardly a boxing bout.

It has to do with skill set. I think to be under 6'4 that HW would have to have an otherwordly skill set in comparison to the 3 headed giant at the top of the division currently. There's only one (soon to be HW) that has that type of skill set, Usyk. I don't see anyone in the pipeline that's under 6'4 except for him that has to skill to out duel these big guys.

Tyson would tell you fighters get bigger and stronger bc they have.

i can tell who has boxed and who hasn't on here bc one just doesn't say Mike Tyson and assume it's a holy grail.

Tyson had a perfect style for tall guys , it wasn't bc he was just fast and hit hard. No one currently is training in that style who remotely is of 5'11 .

The closest guy is George Arias who's about 6'0 with a Frazier like one moreso .

One cannot just use Mike Tyson and act like bc he did it so can everyone else if they wanted to, it takes actual talent.

Being under 6'4 doesn't mean one can't do it , I listed the 3 in here.

    So basically out of a top 100 about 3 . That's 3%.

Vlad Sirenko is very Tyson like , he's also 6'4 240 plus .

He's going to be the next M. Tyson like fighter .

A guy at under 6'2 is probably not going to happen , it will be interesting to see what George Arias does.

Sirenko with Bashir is as close a story you'll get to Tyson and Cus . He's only about 80% the full article , another 10 fights you'll see what I'm talking about.

problem with arias is that he has no chin and no power so yeah him and rivas are the only guys a bit over 6'.

but no there is nobody under 6' currently out there that can get the job done.

I know he personally would disagree with me as hes on record as saying that Tyson would've destroyed him but I think someone like Tyson Fury would give Iron Mike a lot of trouble. I think its possible that Mike gets in underneath and brutalizes Furys body and eventually connects up top for a ko but it wouldnt surprise me if the fight looked like the Wilder fight. Mike may not be able to connect at all at his size against someone as mobile and tall as Fury who can also take a punch. Wlad would give mike trouble too. Wilder and AJ get obliterated by prime Mike.

Fair play Galv, I'll keep an eye on him. But I meant Tyson and his sub 6 foot stature... sticking it to the taller/ bigger super-heavy guys.

    It's just inspiring.
