Can Canelo, a PPV golden goose in his prime lose in Las Vegas with these judges on what is essentially a Mexcian holiday?

Yes if he's stopped, or floored and lost what most people consider 7 -8 rounds. Anything less than that he's not walking out of the arena without his belts.

Its its close on the cards, 7-5 to 5-7, he's going to win or do no worse than a draw and likely win the official decision. That's my prediction.

Canelo lost both fights to Golovkin according to the majority of media cards, and GGG was past his best when these fight happened. Jacbos is a very good contender, and wouldn't be the worst lineal middleweight champion. He's in his prime.

If you ask me who wins the way I would score it, that's a completely different story. Do you like the guy who's more active and lands more ( likely Jacobs ), or counters cleaner ( Likely Canelo )? I seldom do this, but I'm calling a draw on my card, 6 rounds each.

Despite having been kayoed in the past, it's clear that Jacob is durable, and he is clever/elusive enough that he doesn't absorb too much damage. Most of the danger Jacobs presents is in his right hand: it is sharp, whether it is thrown as a lead or a counter, and Jacobs lands it from multiple angles with a variety of setups, as a straight, a cross, and very nicely as an uppercut.

I made this point in another thread, so others might be seeing this argument for the second time: if Canelo wins, the benefit to his resume/legacy is huge. Jacobs has clearly been near the pinnacle of the sport for several years now. If Canelo beats him decisively, that will be one of the jewels in his crown a decade from now, or whenever he's been measured for his suit for the IBHOF induction ceremony.

If we're assessing what he's done so far he's had some wins that were just filler (Lopez, Hatton, Fielding), some slightly better filler wins (geriatric Mosely, poor Ryan Rhodes), wins that generated huge attention but were not big from a competitive sense (Khan, JCC Jr.). Beating up all those guys don't hurt Canelo's legacy, but they aren't the kind of thing that get people talking about your all time greatness. People on this board aren't still contemplating Kid Gavilan because he beat Chuck Davey (generally).

In terms of what stands out so far, Canelo's win over GGG is obviously enormous, despite the weak controversy from GGG loyalists. Similarly huge are Canelo's four consecutive wins in 2014/2015: Angulo, Lara, Kirkland, and Cotto. Beating Trout proves his cred too. A convincing win over Jacobs represents a comparable achievement, and a significant move forward for his historical legacy.

Can Jacobs win a close fight in Vegas? Because it is going to be a close fight that is going the distance. GGG beat Canelo twice. I guess we will have to wait and see if the fix is once again in.

Not sure. Canelo is the safe bet, hard to see Jacobs getting the decision, or being able to get the decision

I see this going the distance and I don't think there will be any knockdowns. I don't think Jacobs has much of a chance to get the nod. If the fight was going to be scored fairly and accurately I would still make Canelo a slight favorite. He is in his absolute prime and he has gotten better with time and experience. With fair and accurate scoring in place I would make Canelo a 3-2 favorite. Unfortunately I think Canelo will at least be given the benefit of the doubt in any reasonably close round therefore the reality is that Jacobs will have to beat Canello from pillar to post to get the decision. Ain't going to happen. I think Canello is at least a 3-1 favorite to win by decision.

I actually expect Canelo to win an easier than expected fight maybe even by stoppage. Just a hunch

I thought Canelo improved massively from Golovkin 1 to Golovkin 2 and despite Fielding being overmatched Canelo handled him. I think his body is fully acclimated to 160 and so is his punch

I actually wasn’t all that impressed with Jacobs vs Sulecki and Derevchenko getting hit a decent amount and having relatively close fights. He did look great vs Golovkin but I don’t think he’s replicated that performance.

As for Canelo stopping Jacobs when Golovkin couldn’t. Well Canelo is a viscous body puncher and a great counter puncher. Some of those counter hooks and uppercuts he hit Gennady with would lay out a lot of middleweights including Jacobs

The only man powerful enough to defeat Canelo in the cards was Mayweather, thus elevating him to goat status for being stronger than goldenboy money. Jacobs cannot defeat corruption.

In all seriousness, I agree with Philly, although I could see this go as a UD or a MD for Canelo. Whatever the outcome, I hope we'll get a great fight out of this.

Jacobs starts well, landing from distance and popping the jab. That can only last so long though, and Canelo eventually cuts the distance and starts dropping hard shots to the body.

Canelo to end Jacobs in R9

This one's tough to call. I think it will be a pretty exciting fight with a lot of hard punches exchanged. Jacobs should be able to win comfortably if he fights a disciplined fight and controls distance behind straight punches, picks his spots, etc., but I see him getting sucked into a lot of trading at closer range.

That’s my issue....I was pretty high on Jacobs and Fernando Guerrero when they were upcoming prospects.... I was way wrong on Guerrero and Jacobs is up in the air although it seems he will come up short of my initial expectations.

The disciplined fight comment stands out to me. He seems to have all the tools but is very inconsistent and undisciplined. Just scored GGG and Pirog fights and he does good to great in both fights when he sticks to the plan and listens to his corner. He must be maddingly frustrating to train.

I had GGG 6-6 in rds w/GGG winning by virtue of the KD. When he listened to his corner and boxed he won 6 rds when he got drawn into a fight he lost 6 rds.

Against Pirog (admittedly a younger version) he wins rd 1. Goes to the ropes and loses rd 2. His corner says stay off the ropes it’s not good for you there. Back him up, he can’t fight backing up. Jacobs wins the next 2 rds up 39-37 on my card and the judges....rd 5 goes to the ropes and gets KO’d.

I agree if he is disciplined he can win this fight and many others perhaps....I just don’t see him consistent enough against championship level comp to be disciplined for 12 full rds.

If he can we will get a tough close fight....if not he will lose wide or get stopped.

    Just my $0.02
