i guess every fighter has blind followers no matter where he is from. I thought Kessler looked pretty good, and Sartison showed some pretty good skills, but it wasn`t a one sided beatdown as many people (not the original poster) have insinuated in this thread. Also in terms of the first round, Kessler barely landed anything. Almost all this punches were blocked or avoided. Sartison wobbled Kessler with a counterpunch and also landed some clean body shots. Clear Sartison round. I still think Kessler is a damn good fighter, but I`ve seen him much better than what I saw yesterday. Sartison was about the same caliber as Andrade`s last opponent, Stieglitz, maybe a little bit better. Sartison is very small compared to Kessler, nothing too special but solid skillset.
I agree to the last bit of your post but Kessler clearly outlanded Sartison in round one. Thats not even up for disussion, mate. Ive seen Kessler better as well but I think two factors play a part in this and that is: 1. Ring rust and 2. The punch he received in round one. Kessler dominated and punched the guy all the way to the hospital. If a KO like that isnt impressive to you I dont know what is - despite Sartison being a top 10 - 15 smw.
Honestly, he was more hurt than he ever was in the Calzaghe fight. I have actually never seen him so hurt. That, of course, doesnt say a lot, because he rarely get hurt.
I'll second that. I thought after hearing the round by round it was going to be worse than it was when I saw it.
It is a little bit disturbing. I am worried also. Is it good for Mikkel to have two trainers now? I mean, I heard that sometimes Olsen and Montoya give Mikkel contradictory orders. Montoya wants more pressure, and Olsen something else. I am not so sure they compliment each other well. How can it be ringrust. His layoff before the Beyer fight was longer than this one.Go check the dates for the fights yourself. IT IS NOT RINGRUST IT IS SOMETHING ELSE.
It is not just rust. He fought Lucas in January 06 and Beyer in October 06. 10 months later. He was damned sharp against Beyer. He fought Calzaghe in nov 07 and now 7 1/2 months later he show up 20 percent slower, lacking coordination and a lot of other things also. His stamina however looked better than ever.
I just finished watching the fight (thanks for the link Astola) and what hit me most about this fight was the speed and technique of Sartison. He was actually a lot better than I had expected. I still think, like most of you guys, that Kessler looked a bit slower than usual and was a bit too sloppy with his left hand, but I really think it is a bit over the edge to think that Kessler is on the decline.
I think rust did play a factor, but I have to wonder if Kessler perhaps overtrained for this fight. Obviously I wasn't there to know for sure, so it's just a guess on my part. Also, I'm going to give Sartison some credit. Goes to show that just because we haven't heard of someone doesn't mean they can't be a good fighter. All in all, it's a good bounceback fight for Kessler- a convincing win, but with enough to work on that he won't get complacent. I really hope he gets back into the ring again before the end of the year and gets a little more active. There's alot of fights to be made at 168, and now's not the time for him to sit on the sidelines for 10 months.
This was a fight Kessler could not afford to loose. He knew that most people wasn't giving Sartison much of a chance and clearly felt some pressure coming in as the favourite. On top of that he came back after a loss and a fairly long layoff. He probably felt he had to play it as safe as possible while still putting on a convincing performance. Now, what boxing style would you choose to meet the demands just described. Not an easy choice, and that was exactly what Kessler's performance reflected. IMO he was surprised to find that Sartison was even better than he expected and recall that Kessler already knew Sartison's qualities. Alltogether, Kessler did a good job against a massively underestimated opponent. To my taste Kessler got hit too much and his two coaches need to work out a coordinated manner in which to work. Getting advice (maybe even contradictory) from two coaches in two different languages is ridiculous.
