I'd say these two did enough to be called Elite, Probably Eubank and And I could see both beating Jones, just based on chin, will and punching power
Froch certainly earned a case for elite with that resume, Joes rests on beating a crocked Kessler. I dont think you can make that case for eubank, though he showed he transcended the eurolevel wbo title of the 90s. Perhaps elite FOR HIS TIME, when the SMW division was half strength. there is no way on earth either froch or joe beat jones, and joe certainly knew this himself, nevermind what we think, he'd never get in the ring in the first place. Froch might give it a go but he would be in for a hard night like with Ward. I should have mentioned Collins as one of the elite SMWs of the 90s, but again, hes going to be one step behind jones all night, not for wnat of trying though.
Always wondered how Andre Ward would do against Roy Jones Jr with his rough and spoiling tactics and his boxing smarts. Curious to know if Ward would be able to figure out Jones or if Jones would be too much for Ward.
I see Joe getting absolutely beat solidly. He wouldn't be aggressive at all, and would just go into survival mode after taking a blistering shot he never saw coming that hurt him more than he's ever been hurt. After that shot, likely in round 2 or 3, the fight is over. Joe's confidence levels sink
I don't think Eubank or Benn really wanted any part of Roy. Benn wasn't scared of Roy, he just knew it would be a long night. I believe Eubank just didn't want the fight.
Eubank has said numerous times that he never chased the likes of Roy, as he was content to defend his WBO belt in Europe. He said that fighting Roy in his prime would have been career suicide, and that a fight could have taken years off of his career. However, he did say that he'd have fought Roy, had Roy have become his WBO mandatory. The only issue with that comment though, is that it could never have happened, as Roy would never have had a rating with the WBO. Regarding Benn, in my honest opinion, he'd definitely have taken the fight had he have had the opportunity. Regarding the rest of your post, I agree 100%. It was a shame that we missed out on seeing Roy against better opposition. But it's a myth that he was reluctant to face the top fighters of his era. Liles priced himself out and King wanted future options with a Benn fight. After that, he fought Griffin, Hill and Reggie, before he tried to fight Dariusz and a rematch with Hopkins. And when those fights couldn't be made, he then fought Ruiz then Tarver. Again, had he have not wanted to have taken risks, he'd have sat on his IBF, SMW belt for years, where he could have made numerous defences against a host of B and C class challengers from the IBF.
Roy was getting caught by a really slow Ruiz at heavy, Ruiz would have been toyed with by Usyk who would have destroyed Jones at heavy the same way Holy would of, no way would Jones have made a good cruiser, too slow with that weight and not smart enough when he loses his speed, they would haver both countered Roy to death and made him really negative. I agree that Jones would have had a much better chance at middle v Monzon who was very open to the counter jab, problem is I don`t know how often Jones through the counter jab, M.Tyson threw more counter jabs than Roy and all three of these fighters probably have too much reach for Roy matched with their ability.
Kessler fought well v Joe I didn`t see anything wrong with him, he was beating Calzaghe at first but Joe adjusted and Kessler couldn`t, Kessler was younger when he fought Joe than when he fought Joe and Joe looked much better than Froch did v the same opponent.
one hand went earlyon, after which kesslost his lead so who knows. I would say froch did better, staying just ahead of kessler (but only just) atall times in his win.
