I got Ruddock smashing his way to victory here. Cooney gives him a tough go of it in the early rounds, but as it goes along, Ruddock wears him down and knocks him out.
My money's on ruddock in this one, both were more or less glasscannons with murderous lefts but ruddock also had a good right when he did use it and was a much more dynamic fighter, Cooney does have the power to put ruddock down too but if they fought 10 times I think ruddock would win 7 of those. One thing I'm for certain on is if this fight did happen it wouldn't go the distance.
I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry I let my fans down. I'm sorry. It was never my fault. Meet me in an exhibition (in which by the way I was booed out of the building) in Pasadena, Texas and you'll fight the real me. I really can't explain how I lost. What they did to me was criminal(even though I was a no balance glass jawed gutless coward who ended up rich due to his managers). I was forced to be a coke head and alcoholic rump ranger because of the pressure on me. (Not to mention the pressure on my sphincter). Poor poor victim Gerry. The entire world conspired against him.
I have to go with Cooney in an epic fight that either man could end in a moments notice. I think Ruddock hurts Cooney often, but he was not a big combination puncher and liked to admire his work over going in for the kill. Cooney gets that hook in faster, and with more power , I see him digging in the left hook to the body and slowing Razor down enough that he gets him late on the chin, likely right after Ruddock smashes him and gets him into trouble again. Good fight, but I think Cooney has a little better killer instinct when he has his man in trouble. Also, Ruddock was no defensive wizard and that means that Cooney hits him often, in my mind that spells defeat for Ruddock in round 8-9 by KO.
Yeah, I find it a pick em type fight and any outcome plausible....but this would be my pick as the likely outcome.
Ruddock by fifth round kayo. Had a little more than Cooney in the tank, though there is always the chance for the Cooney hook to hit lotto, but they are very slim.
After seeing the Tommy Morrison vs Ruddock fight, I feel Razor goes down about the same way, except that Cooney hit a little harder than Morrison. That means goodnight to Razor Ruddock. Morrison was a better combo puncher , faster and more textbook in his punches, But Cooney had an equally awesome left hook, and he really could dig them into body shots. Cooney was 6' 6" so he could torque and leverage into them, he also had better stamina than Morrison. Razor loses 8/10. Cooney really was a good fighter.
People are down on Cooney, he wasn't perfect. But at his best he was great. Fast, killer lest hook, good right, killer imstinct. Did good against Holmes in his prime, who was one of the best. Losing to Foreman and Spinks is not shamefull. I think Coomey at his best is at LEAST 50/50 with any other boxer. Good jab too.
