Page peaked early in his pro career. His reflexes were amazing here, and his weight was right - 228 lbs. Too bad he started showing for important fights at 240 lbs.
Cool broadcast featuring upcoming heavyweights. Nice to see Jerry Quarry doing post-fight ring interviews. I'd thought he was done as a broadcaster in 1977 with the Lorenzo Zanon comeback fight & losing his tv job with CBS. Following the Page-Martin fight, HBO showed very late sub (for Tex Cobb) Pinklon Thomas against Bobby Jordan. Thomas shut Jordan's eye and the bout was stopped going into round 6. The main event featured Gerry Cooney against Leroy Boone. Cooney wore Boone down before taking him out with a trio of body shots (including a nice right) in round 6. During the Cooney fight Greg Page was interviewed and said he'd definitely fight Cooney someday.
Spot on. He just didn't progress anywhere near how he should have in the pro's. Oodles of talent but it was never nurtured properly and he lacked consistent drive. He probably didn't improve from around the Ward/Monroe fights tho he hinted he was about to put it together around Snipes. Buster Douglas was a lot this way too. Great upload by Russell.
I always thought Page needed an Angie Dundee to nurture him along. Angie does so good with the boxer types---but there was no way Mike Trainer was going to have Angie dedicating any time to another prospect. Funny but back then everyone was on the Page bandwagon. Briefly. But then like 79 or so, it was the Dokes bandwagon. Never the Tate bandwagon who moved up faster than either. Then, after the Lyle destruction it became the Cooney bandwagon. Pinky's following was like late 82 or beginning of 83. Funny how public sentiment can be swayed or changed And once a guy falls out of favor, it is really almost magic to get them back to that level of respect ever again. What else is as fickle as the up and coming heavyweight prospects?
Arguably Page's most impressive fight outside of Marty Monroe. 7 rounds earlier than Michael Dokes did too.
