I dont know why people dont think these were good punches. They are accurate and fast. The impact clearly solid.

What non participants dont understand is against better opponents you just dont get the time and space to really load up. Two light punches are better than one heavy blow. But they are never light if the contact is that good.

These are sharp blows. Flush. Hes walking onto them. Tunney is repeatedly putting a punch into each opening and knocking Georges' head all over the place. These are small gloves so hes making UFC style impact here with those punches.

    It's all good.

Wow that uppercut followed by that quick blistering overhand right, was vicious. And Tunney keeps moving and turning Carpentier. Good stuff. Gene knew what he was doing in that ring even if he didn’t quite sit down and get his body into all the punches.
Smart, fit, athletic and with a mean streak. Gene is a handful for most anyone close to his size. 65-1 doesn’t come easy.

Ali threw many arm punches himself against equally outgunned opponents...or did you ever notice that?

Im very vocal in that I think Carpentier was a media created fraud who was nowhere near as good as his press. However, I have to give the guy credit for pushing the referee away and walking back into the fray when Tunney was beating the **** out of him. The referee was trying to stop the fight to save Carpentier and Georges was having none of it. Very gutsy because he was taking an ass kicking in this fight. That being said he kind of blew that goodwill when he pulled his patented "quit and claim foul" at the end. I wouldnt call that performance going out on your shield.

An interesting side note to this fight is that the complete film of it was assumed lost for years and years. It was found by some construction workers in an abandon building they were tearing down. They broke through a wall and inside a sealed room was a projector and two reels encompassing the complete fight.

They’re not particularly impressive punches when Ali throws them either (although I guess the spectacle of seeing someone with Ali’s size and hand speed makes it more noteworthy). What’s your point?

See if you ever catch me raving about a sequence where Ali wings a bunch of arm punches against a beaten, overmatched opponent...
