Jacobs is quick as has good power but his skills are very basic, is he just an okay solid fighter who people are overrating?
No he's not. Much praise and respect to him for conquering that monster but he's going to ride his cancer comeback story until the floor is worn out and the wheels fall off. He was put to sleep before which in my opinion doesn't happen to tier 1 fighters in their prime. He also was knocked down by the Latin Snake for God's Sake. His very best win is against Peter Quillin. He looked foolish and a little slow missing all of those punches against Canelo. Who is no defensive wizard. B- at best. He will not be a hall of famer. Who's really a fan of his? Can't say he's overrated because no one's ever giving him much praise besides GGG fans and now Canelo fans. Never thought much of the guy.
He's an elite middleweight, but I've personally always rated him at the bottom of the elite middleweight pile. So that consists of GGG, Canelo, BJS, Andrade and Jacobs. He beat Derevyanchenko and gave both GGG and Canelo a competitive fight, so I think he should still be in the conversation. Other than those 4 in the elite list he beats anybody else.
I'm glad you posted this. I'm a huge fan of Daniel Jacobs the person but I realized after watching the Canleo fight that he's just not as good as people say he is. Going back to the urias fight and onward, I just haven't been that impressed with him. 0 footwork. I think you might be onto something .
On an A-Z scale with Z being Zelenoff and A being ATG, C is about right. He's championship material in an average division, but he's not P4P or HOF caliber. Seems like more of a mental block than anything at this point- he just showed too much respect to GGG and Canelo. That said, effecticely ending Quillins career in a round, beating Derevyanchenko and Sulecki, and stopping everyone he fought from the Pirog loss to the GGG fight is really good work. He's fought two HOF fighters and took rounds off each. He's pretty much the gatekeeper to the elite.
Is it really fairly weak though? Looking at the Ring top 10, you'd have to go back to the 90's to find a better one IMO
